About this jobBand 6 Junior Sister / Charge Nurse. Post holder supports the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in providing effective nursing leadership, ensuring the Nursing & Midwifery Council code of conduct is central to the team’s care.
Works closely with the multi‑disciplinary team to deliver high standards of individualised patient care, improving the patient experience. Supports clinical role and assists in management of operational issues.
Key responsibilities- Provision of care to patients, their families and carers in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate continuing professional development, reflecting individual, team and organisational needs.
- Coordinate an inpatient ward during day shifts Monday to Friday.
- Interpret ECGs and manage arrhythmias; maintain current Intermediate Life Support certification.
- Provide supervision, team motivation and leadership, supporting the Band 7 in ward management.
- Drive change around Cardiology and Cardio‑geriatric services.
- Work under pressure and meet deadlines while undertaking additional management responsibilities.
- Operate day shifts primarily Monday to Friday, with possible weekend day shifts.
- Act as a clinical expert, taking charge in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.
- Participate in delivery of care to meet individual patient needs.
- Promote development, implementation and review of standards, policies, procedures and clinical guidelines.
- Assist in leading and motivating staff for service development.
- Encourage evidence‑based practice and support performance improvement within the unit.
- Serve as a Link Nurse resource for a specified clinical area and disseminate information to the team.
- Provide nursing practice support across specialties.
- Substantial experience at Band 5 in an NHS acute hospital setting.
- Held recognised student supervisor and assessor qualification.
- Co‑ordination of an inpatient ward over day shifts Monday to Friday.
- ECG interpretation and arrhythmia management skills.
- Current Intermediate Life Support certification.
- Proven leadership and teamwork skills, with capability to assist Band 7.
- Demonstrable ability to work to the full Band 5 job description, under pressure, to deadline, and undertake significant additional management responsibility.
