ThePosition
We are seeking an Island Nurse for Hoy to support our team and advance our vision of becoming a centre of excellence in remote and rural healthcare.
Hoy, with a population of approximately 388, is a branch of the Orcades Practice (approximately 1,953 patients) which consists of six single‑handed island practices with GPs and nurses providing 24/7 healthcare to the smaller islands of Orkney. Weekly teams meetings enable clinicians to share knowledge and experience to overcome professional isolation and provide strong peer support.
As part of a small health team delivering care to the island population, the post holder will:
- Assess, plan and monitor the quality of health care across the community and lifespan of residents.
- Provide community and practice nursing services.
- Work autonomously in a remote and rural setting.
- Experienced Band 6 nurse.
- Forward‑thinking, highly motivated, and evidence of up‑to‑date clinical knowledge and skills.
- Interest in working in and developing a wide range of skills in a remote and rural setting.
- Non‑medical prescribing qualification (essential).
- Able to live and remain a resident within the UK for the duration of employment with NHS Orkney.

Full time, 36 hours per week. - Contract:
Fixed‑term until 25 January 2027 to cover for substantive postholders’ secondment leave.
Band 6 salary. If residing on Orkney, you’ll receive a Distant Islands Allowance of £1,719 pro‑rata per annum.
