Job Description & How to Apply Below
Location: Saint Margaret's Hope

Braeburn is an extra-care housing service, providing a safe, supportive and friendly environment for older people to live as independently as possible, with support available when required. We are a welcoming and close-knit community, where meaningful engagement and wellbeing are at the heart of what we do.

Located in St Margaret’s Hope, Braeburn benefits from a beautiful coastal setting, offering a lovely view to enjoy whilst spending time outdoors.

We are looking for a volunteer to support the development and maintenance of our outdoor areas. While we already have established garden spaces, we are keen to further develop these, including introducing opportunities for growing vegetables in the future.

Role responsibilities
  • Supporting the planting and maintenance of flowers and garden beds
  • Assisting with weeding, general upkeep and improving outdoor spaces
  • Helping to develop new ideas, including future vegetable growing areas
  • Working alongside our service users, encouraging involvement in gardening activities
  • Using initiative to work independently at times, helping shape and maintain the gardens

There is plenty of opportunity for creativity and input, and the volunteer would play an important role in gradually shaping the outdoor environment.

Requirements
  • Has an interest in gardening, including flowers, plants and ideally growing vegetables
  • Has some practical gardening skills (formal experience not essential)
  • Is confident working both independently and alongside others
  • Has an interest in working with older people and supporting participation in activities
  • Is friendly, patient and enjoys being part of a community

All volunteers will receive an induction, which includes Health and Safety, Confidentiality and an introduction to working with older and potentially vulnerable adults. Ongoing support will be provided by the team.

Frequency & commitment

We are flexible and would welcome any time the volunteer is able to offer. Whether this is a few hours a week or more, we would be happy to work around availability.

Volunteers (aged 12‑25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity. Find out more
