Job description

At Forestry and Land Scotland, we have a permanent opportunity for a Forest Craftsperson based in Galloway. If you enjoy working outdoors in varied environments and want to play a hands‑on role in managing Scotland’s national forests and land, we’d love to hear from you.

In this role, you’ll support a wide range of forest management and stewardship activities. This is a practical, field‑based role where you’ll work across remote, rugged and steep terrain in all weather conditions. Your work will include tree felling and chainsaw operations, planting and restocking, fencing maintenance, weed control, and maintaining visitor facilities such as paths, trails and signage. You’ll also contribute to wider environmental and wildlife management activities, helping to protect and enhance the forest estate.

This role requires you to work both independently and as part of a team, making decisions on the ground to safely and effectively deliver planned work programmes. You’ll also use technology such as GPS mapping tools and be supported with training to build your technical skills and certifications.

To be successful, you’ll have a genuine passion for outdoor working and practical land‑based tasks, with the ability to problem‑solve both independently and collaboratively. You’ll have strong communication skills, good time management, and be comfortable using basic IT systems such as Microsoft Office. A willingness to learn and develop new skills through training is essential.

Desirable experience includes previous work in forestry operations such as tree planting, fencing, or vegetation management, as well as knowledge of health and safety practices in a practical working environment.
