About the RoleAs a Commis Chef, you ll work across campus kitchens preparing, producing, and presenting food to a consistently high standard. You ll support daily kitchen operations including food preparation, stock control, cleaning, and maintaining excellent health and safety practices.
Working closely with the wider culinary team, you ll help deliver outstanding food service for students, staff, visitors, and conference guests while gaining valuable experience in a professional hospitality environment.
Key Responsibilities Food Preparation & Kitchen OperationsPrepare and present food to high quality standards following recipes and instructions
Support food production across multiple campus catering outlets
Maintain portion control and standard operating procedures
Ensure food products are used within best-before dates using stock rotation methods (FIFO)
Open and close kitchen work areas as required
Maintain clean and sanitised work spaces at the start and end of each shift
Maintain high standards of food hygiene and kitchen safety
Follow Health & Safety and COSHH regulations at all times
Report equipment faults or hazards promptly
Maintain professional personal presentation and protective clothing standards
Assist with stock control, ordering, and deliveries
Support inventory checks and storage procedures
Ensure efficient use of ingredients to minimise waste
Supervise agency staff, casual workers, and kitchen porters where required
Attend team briefings and departmental meetings
Support a positive, respectful, and inclusive working environment
Participate in training and personal development activities
NVQ Level 2 in Food Preparation (or equivalent City & Guilds qualification)
Level 2 Food Safety Certificate
Experience working in a food preparation or professional kitchen environment
Good understanding of food hygiene and safe working practices
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Good literacy, numeracy, and basic IT skills
Ability to work independently and follow instructions effectively
Must be aged 18 or over (due to equipment operation regulations)
Knowledge of HACCP, COSHH, and Health & Safety regulations
Manual handling training
Understanding of dietary requirements and diversity considerations
36 hours per week on a rota basis
Includes evenings, weekends, and bank holidays
7-day, year-round operation
