Job Introduction
At Turning Point, we support people across The UK with Mental Health, Substance Misuse and Learning Disabilities. As a Youth Support Worker, you will ensure that young people living in Turning Point’s supported accommodation are supported to thrive and reach their full potential in a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment, increasing their in dependency to create a positive move on into the community.
As a Youth Support Worker, you will join The Lancashire Young People supported accommodation services that supports 18 young people (Agedat our service in Leyland, The Mill.
Role Responsibility
You will be supporting Young People to manage their finances, gain independent living skills, promote health, wellbeing and healthy lifestyle choices as well as supporting them to maximise their involvement in local training, education, and employment opportunities.
The role is changeable, and every day will be different, some examples of what you will be responsible for are:
Managing the referrals, sign up, support and move on for the Young People
Developing, implementing and reviewing individual support plans and risk assessments focussing on young people’s needs, strengths and goals.
Providing support with budgets and finances
Provide an excellent rent / service charge collection service, ensuring regular accounts monitoring and contact with people regarding payments
Completing accurate and detailed daily records for the Young People
Providing practical support and guidance to the Young People including daily living skills, cooking, cleaning, and ‘moving on’ plans
Ensuring proactive and constructive communication to the Young People including facilitating weekly key-working sessions, problem solving and supporting with their day-to-day needs
Supporting the Young People and landlords with housing management tasks addressing practical aspects of living in supported housing, including managing repairs, tenancies, income and anti-social behaviour.
Prioritising your own case load and using your initiative to plan and implement agreed actions
Building and maintaining relationships with a range of other professionals to work together to aim for positive outcomes for the Young People
Facilitating and arranging engaging activities with tenants throughout the year.
To work alongside colleagues, and management in shaping and developing the way we provide and manage our schemes, including improvements to processes and how we work with young people
Following organisation policies and procedures to ensure compliance of the service
Turning Point responds to the needs of the individuals and some of the tasks are therefore unpredictable. It is expected that the Youth Support Worker will work in a flexible way when required and undertake tasks that are not specifically covered within the job description, which can include cover for colleagues as required.
The Ideal Candidate
As a Youth Support Worker, we are looking for candidates who have knowledge and experience of working with young people with complex needs, homelessness, children who are looked after and in transition to leaving care or care leavers.
We’re ideally looking for a person with a NVQ level 3 or equivalent in Social Care, Youth Support Work or Housing/Homelessness, however this is not essential for the role. We are also looking for people with a background of working with young people and an understanding of homelessness and the impact this has on the wellbeing of Young People.
Ideally you will have experience in support planning, re-engaging and motivating young people to participate in employment and work programmes, education, training, volunteering, and skill building opportunities.
You need to be a great team player with lots of energy, you’ll need strong communication skills, a flexible approach and positive attitude to achieve targets in a challenging environment which requires empathy, understanding and patience.
Shift patterns
The service is staffed 24 hours a day / 7 days a week. As a Youth Support worker, you must be flexible to the service needs which include days/evenings and weekend working.
