The Role
Responsible for the safe and efficient movement of Class 398 Tram‑Train vehicles within Taff’s Well Depot, using computer‑based control systems in line with TfW rules and procedures. This includes coordinating movements with the Mainline Signaller Workstation, adhering to national and local operating standards, and maintaining a safe working environment through strict application of Depot Protection and OLE isolation rules.
The role also involves recording and reporting safety incidents, supporting daily operational control of TfW services, maintaining knowledge of Class 398 systems (including OBES), and providing accurate information to support performance and delay investigations.
Role Responsibilities- Ensure safe operations and compliance by following the Rule Book, local instructions, isolation procedures, and maintaining key safety interfaces with signalling and control teams.
- Manage depot and level crossing movements, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of trains, vehicles, and pedestrians, including shunting, stabling, and access/egress.
- Coordinate train planning and allocation, including stabling plans, monitoring timetables, allocating rolling stock, and responding to service changes.
- Maintain operational performance and communication, recording delays, providing updates to staff, and acting as a key point of contact for depot movement queries.
- Support depot operations and resilience, including working during degraded conditions, applying depot protection rules, liaising on OLE isolations, and assisting control teams during disruption.
- A good standard of education is required at GCSE level or equivalent in English and Mathematics.
- Ability to manage safety critical incidents, following rules and instructions and maintaining effective level of verbal communication.
- Can work unsupervised and manage own workload through prioritising.
- Capacity to work under pressure is essential.
- Can display excellent levels of situational awareness, self‑organisation, task focus and sound decision making.
