Location: Swindon

Heavy Haul Rail is the UK’s next‑generation rail freight partner, operating 95 locomotives and over 1000 wagons to move 17million tonnes of freight a year across the country. We support a wide range of industries, deliver trains to more than 100 locations, and maintain critical rail infrastructure for both freight and passenger operators.

What You’ll Do
  • Ensure planned and reactive rostering is completed on time and cost‑effectively, while adhering to workforce terms, company standards and fatigue guidance.
  • Produce efficient base rosters and issue weekly rosters for all commodities.
  • Prepare and post daily alteration sheets for each depot.
  • Maintain competent staffing by verifying source competency data and ensuring only qualified staff are rostered.
  • Manage drivers’ annualised hours and compile annual leave rosters for drivers and ground staff.
  • Implement diagram alterations on working timetables and update rosters accordingly.
  • Operate rostering and competence tools, and integrate with industry systems.
  • Arrange hotel bookings for driver crews and ground staff to maximise efficiency.
  • Liaise with Control and other departments to secure train coverage as per the train plan and commercial orders.
  • Track adverse fatigue warnings and reconcile roster changes with appropriate systems.
  • Order hire vehicles and book medicals as required.
  • Provide rostering cover, undertake cross‑cover and hire‑in of resources when necessary.
  • Contribute to annual performance appraisals for the rostering team.
General Safety Responsibilities
  • Take responsibility for personal health and safety and that of others affected by your actions.
  • Co‑operate with colleagues and UK Rail to comply with health and safety legislation.
  • Follow company training, instruction and procedures relevant to rostering.
  • Report any safety concerns to your line manager promptly.
  • Use UK Rail safety equipment appropriately and comply with internal control checks, such as hidden and minimum rest periods.
  • Ensure all safety‑critical staff comply with the Drugs and Alcohol policy and HS&E procedures.
  • Adhere to OPSHH
    006 standard and observe all safety training requirements.
What We’re Looking For
  • Knowledge of freight train operations and railway geography.
  • A good level of general education and strong organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and a self‑motivated approach.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency with Windows applications, ORS and other railway industry systems.
  • Understanding of driver and ground staff conditions of service.
  • Willingness to work flexibly in an office environment and adapt to changing work needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work to standardised instructions and standardise others’ work.
  • Commitment to safety, confidentiality, trust and a calm approach under pressure.
