Yard Operative

We currently have a vacancy for an experienced Builders Merchant Yard Operative to support the smooth running of our busy yard by handling, storing and managing building materials. Assisting customer with orders whilst maintaining a safe and organised yard area, contributing to the overall efficiency and ensuring excellent customer service at all times.

This is a varied, hands‑on position in a fast‑paced outdoor environment, requiring a proactive approach, good teamwork, and a strong focus on safety and accuracy.

• Assist customers with loading and unloading building materials
• Provide excellent customer service, answering queries and directing customers to products or staff
• Ensure customer orders are picked accurately and fulfilled in a timely manner
• Receive, check, and store incoming deliveries
• Prepare materials for dispatch, ensuring correct labelling and packaging
• Operate forklifts, pallet trucks, and other equipment (training provided where required)
• Maintain accurate stock records and assist with inventory counts
• Carry out regular yard checks to ensure cleanliness, organisation, and safety
• Monitor stock levels and report shortages or damaged goods
• Ensure all tools and machinery are kept in good working condition and report defects promptly
• Contribute to maintaining a safe, efficient, and well‑presented yard environment

• Previous experience in a builder’s merchant, warehouse, or yard environment is essential
• Ability to handle heavy materials and carry out manual handling tasks safely
• Forklift licence desirable (training can be provided)
• Basic knowledge of building materials is advantageous
• Strong communication and customer service skills
• High level of attention to detail and accuracy

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
