Basic Function

This position is responsible for supervising the building inspector function in the inspection services division of the planning and community development department. This position performs a variety of the most complex inspection services and assists the building official in planning and directing division activities, with an emphasis on building inspection; performs inspections for the full range of construction development projects; coordinates building inspection and final occupancy service activities with other city departments;

performs complex plan reviews for compliance with applicable construction codes; and performs other related functions as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This position is distinguished from the next higher-level classification of Deputy Building Official in that the latter provides administrative support to the Building Official and manages the daily operations and activities of the building & safety division. This position is distinguished from the next lower-level classification of Senior Building Inspector position in that that latter performs a variety of the journey level inspection services and assists in planning and directing inspection services activities.

(May include, but are not limited to the following):

  • Supervise building inspection function, organizing and managing staffing and workload, coordinating with city staff, maintaining thorough, accurate and timely service delivery.
  • Inspects all types of buildings and structures, including complex construction and development projects, using the current building standards codes and other related construction codes adopted by the City of Santa Cruz.
  • Coordinates with applicants and inspects for compliance with the City of Santa Cruz Green Building Program; proactive in the training, public outreach and continued development of the Green Building Program.
  • Assists applicants whose projects do not conform to requirements, participating in the solution process of changes and modifications to bring the project into code compliance.
  • Resolve project challenges and customer concerns.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations of alternate means of construction.
  • Reviews inspection policies and standard operating procedures, makes recommendations for improvements in efficiency and final work product.
