Water & Sewer System Maintenance Craftsperson
Salary: $27.34 - $35.02 per hour. CDL Required. Requires a Commercial Driver's License. Eligible for Overtime. Double Time for Snow and Ice Operations.
Clothing allowance annually. 15 paid holidays. 15 Sick Days. 12 Vacation. Up to 6 Personal days per year earned by not using sick time.
DefinitionSkilled technical and laboring work in repairing, maintaining, and servicing the town water and sewer systems, and in the operation and preventive maintenance of specialized equipment; all other related work, as required.
SupervisionWorks under the general supervision of the Foreman, who provides oral and written instructions.
Responsibilities- Installs, maintains, and services the water and sewer system; locates and repairs water and sewer mains; lays water pipe, installs, repairs, and replaces lines; may plow snow.
- Responds with crew to water line breaks and undertakes necessary manual work to begin repair of line; ensures that joints are properly sealed, bed trench is properly prepared and backfilled accordingly.
- Repairs hydrants and installs new hydrants; maintains sewer chambers and cleans sewer lines; maintains lift stations; changes water meters.
- Installs, repairs and replaces fire hydrants; installs, repairs and replaces water meters.
- Participates in a variety of trainings including but not limited to Trench Safety Awareness and Asbestos Cement Pipe training.
- May perform water sampling in accordance with protocols.
- Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.
- High school diploma; three years of experience in construction and/or public water system maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License, Class
B. - Grade 1 Water Operators License.
- Considerable knowledge of the operating and maintenance procedures of the municipal water supply system.
- Knowledge of operation and repair of motor equipment.
- General knowledge of the layout of the town.
- Ability to understand and follow mandated safety protocols.
- Ability to perform strenuous laboring work, assemble, disassemble, and repair hydrants and water meters, isolate and repair broken water mains.
- Good mathematics skills. Mechanical skills. Skill in operating various types of water works related equipment. Computer skills. Customer service skills.
- Moderate to strenuous physical effort required. Routine lifting up to 60 pounds.
Some work performed in town residences. Most work performed outside with constant loud noise, potential exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, equipment with moving mechanical parts, and in confined spaces. Outdoor work may be performed in adverse weather conditions with exposure to hazards associated with chemicals, trenches, construction sites, near moving mechanical parts and equipment operation. May be required to work with asbestos containing materials.
Workload subject to seasonal and unplanned fluctuations; employee frequently on call after hours and required to respond to emergency situations. Employee required to participate in division on call overtime rotation.
Moderate to strenuous physical effort generally required. Employee frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak and hear, use hands to operate equipment, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch and reach with hands and arms. Routine required to lift objects weighing up to 60 pounds. Vision requirements include ability to read routine documents and operate motor vehicles and other equipment.
