Mechanical Engineering Support Specialist

Location:

State College, PA – Fully on‑site.

Salary Range: $51,000 – $74,000 per year.

Position Overview

Join Penn State University’s Center for Additive Manufacturing (CIMP‑3D) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL). Provide technical support to engineers and scientists conducting experiments using additive manufacturing (AM) technology.

Responsibilities
  • Provide input to and assist with preliminary designs and program path plans (CAD/CAM support).
  • Perform fabrication, machining, characterization, and mechanical testing of materials.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and faculty on various projects.
  • Operate and maintain metal AM systems.
  • Document process parameters and complete established documentation for task procedures and process evaluation.
  • Maintain and resupply tools and consumables.
  • Ensure proper disposal of lab waste and complete required paperwork and reporting.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD).
  • CNC/Manual machining.
  • Experience interpreting and applying geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • General equipment maintenance and routine preventive maintenance.
  • Machine shop setting / lab safety practices.
  • Prior experience working with a diverse group of people.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills in a technical environment.
  • Problem‑solving skills using structured steps.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Exposure to additive manufacturing.
  • Metallurgical sample preparation and characterization.
  • Experience operating industrial robots.
  • Experience with laser and/or arc welding.
  • Ability to obtain and hold a government security clearance.
  • Military or DoD background.
Minimum Education & Experience

Associate Degree and 2+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Requirements

U.S. citizenship is required. Successful completion of background checks and drug screening is required. Ability to obtain a government security clearance may be required.
