Position Overview
We are searching for an entry‑level or junior Electrical or Computer Engineer to join the Multimodal Sensing and Systems Division of the All Domain Analytics and Signatures Office (A2SO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. A2SO’s mission is to deliver unbiased expertise and government‑owned solutions in sensing, analytics, visualization, and full‑spectrum effects that tackle national security and defense challenges from seabed to space.
Approval of remote and hybrid work is not guaranteed; the position is on‑site in State College, PA.
Job Responsibilities- Contribute to the design, development, implementation, and analysis of next‑generation sensor systems.
- Collaborate with A2SO team members, other ARL units, and external partners on sensor design and development.
- MATLAB and/or LabVIEW proficiency.
- Programming experience in C, C++, and/or Python.
- Basic setup and operation of electronic test equipment.
- PCB layout for multi‑layer RF boards using Altium.
- Experience with the Solid Works tool suite.
- Production of technical documentation for complex system design and construction.
- Linux and Windows operating system knowledge.
- GNU Radio prototyping experience.
- Embedded systems programming, including FPGAs and microcontrollers.
- Current eligibility for a Secret‑level security clearance or higher (may be subject to a background check).
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Science. 2+ years of relevant experience for the Research and Development Engineer – Intermediate Professional level; no prior experience required for the Professional level.
LocationState College, PA – fully on‑site.
Security and Background ChecksAll ARL positions require the ability to obtain a government security clearance. Successful completion of a university background check and pre‑employment drug screen is required. U.S. citizenship is mandatory.
Salary & BenefitsSalary range: $76,700.00 – $ (may be impacted by geographic differential). Penn State offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, retirement plans, paid vacation, sick time, and a generous 75% tuition discount for employees and eligible family members.
