RF and Signal Processing Engineer – The Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University
We are seeking motivated and talented engineers to join our Command, Control, and Communications Innovations team in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. This position will work with senior technical staff to research, design, develop, integrate, and test advanced wireless RF communications systems. The role can be located in State College, PA;
Annapolis Junction, MD; or Reston, VA.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create algorithms and/or software designs
- Develop C/C++ or equivalent code to interface with hardware and associated interfaces (SPI, I2C, etc.)
- Integrate Software Defined Radio (SDR) hardware and software components as appropriate
- Evaluate and develop communication security protocols
Additional responsibilities for higher level positions include:
- Devise, plan, and lead work on complex communications problems that impact current product design or address broad issues for future technologies
- Propose and lead new communications initiatives and guide programs of national significance
- Present papers, lead symposia, and chair committees as a recognized communications leader among sponsors and the technical community
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science discipline, or higher, plus 14 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science preferred
Required
Experience and Skills:
- Computer networking
- Communications protocols
- OSI stack; UDP/TCP/IP
- Familiarity with wireless specifications such as cellular (4G/5G) and WiFi (802.11)
Preferred Experience:
- Software design
- Signal processing
- FPGA development
- Develop C/C++ or equivalent code to interface with hardware (SPI, I2C, etc.)
- Integrate SDR hardware and software components
- Evaluate and develop communication security protocols
- MATLAB/LabVIEW modeling and simulation
- RF principles
- Embedded software/hardware
- Wireless/cyber security
- C‑Language programming
Security and Employment Requirements:
- Subject to a government security investigation; U.S. citizenship required
- Successful completion of a pre‑employment drug screen and background check(s) in accordance with University policies required
Salary Range: $ – $ (may be impacted by geographic differential)
