We are searching for a Mechanical Engineer to join the Energy Science and Power System Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).
Position specifics:
- Assist in the design, development, and testing of novel energy system prototypes to support ARL, Navy and DoD needs.
- Design and analyze mechanical, fluid-flow, and heat transfer components for thermal power plants and other energy conversion systems.
- Assist with component and subsystem test planning, test execution, and test documentation.
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or a similar discipline.
- Experience with material selection, structural design, gears, bearings, pumping elements, heat exchangers, fluid delivery systems, thermal cycles and combustion—highly desired.
- Ability to clearly express ideas in writing and to others.
- Past success in providing ideas in written form for clear comprehension to an audience.
- Proficiency with solid-modeling CAD software (Unigraphics/Siemens NX preferred).
- Knowledge of standard drafting practices including geometric tolerances.
Working location: fully on-site, State College, PA.
Minimum Education , Work Experience & Required CertificationsResearch and Development Engineer – Intermediate Professional:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science + 2+ years of relevant experience (no required certifications). Research and Development Engineer – Professional:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science (no required certifications). All positions require U.S. citizenship and background checks; some positions may require obtaining a government security clearance.
Successful completion of background checks and a pre-employment drug screen is required. Some positions may involve obtaining a government security clearance.
Salary & BenefitsSalary range: $76,700.00 - $ (may be impacted by geographic differential). Penn State offers competitive benefits including medical, dental, vision coverage, retirement plans, paid time off, and a generous 75% tuition discount.
