Software Research and Development Engineer
We are searching for a motivated and talented Software Engineer to join our Comprehensive Software Solutions (CSS) Department in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. This role focuses on developing software solutions to meet the needs of ARL sponsors and internal stakeholders.

- Work closely with a team to develop applications that best fit project needs.
- Maintain version tracking and code documentation.
- Support field testing, including remote or in-person troubleshooting of the software system.
- Rigorously test applications and write unit tests, if required for the project.
- Programming in C/C++, C#, Java, or Python.
- Experience with version tracking tools – Jira, Git.
- Creativity in problem solving.
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
- A degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science.
- Embedded software development experience.
- Graphical user interface development experience.
- Current eligibility for access to classified information at the TS/SCI level or higher, and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required.
Your working location will be fully on-site in State College, PA. This position may also require periodic travel to remote locations to support testing.
Security ClearanceEmployment with the University requires successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. All positions at ARL require candidates to possess the ability to obtain a government security clearance; you will be notified during the interview process if this position is subject to a government background investigation. U.S. citizenship is required. A pre‑employment drug screen is required.
Salary & BenefitsSalary range: $76,700.00 – $. Salary may be impacted by geographic differential.
