Job SummaryWright State University’s Center for Civics, Culture, and Workforce Development invites applications for a full‑time lecturer position to teach our American Civic Literacy course. This course fulfills the educational requirements established in the Advance Ohio Education Act (Senate Bill 1) and requires students to read and engage with key documents in America’s civic tradition. The lecturer will teach four courses per semester and carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the Center’s leadership.
The start date for the 10‑month, renewable contract is August 1, 2026; adjunct work over the summer or during a semester is also possible for additional pay.
The Center for Civics, Culture, and Workforce Development at Wright State University is dedicated to advancing civic literacy, democratic participation, and workforce readiness through innovative education, professional development, and community engagement. As Ohio’s only civic center founded voluntarily by a university, the Center serves as a regional hub for evidence‑based civics instruction, credentialing, and leadership development.
Minimum Qualifications- Master’s degree in history, political science, or a closely related field.
- Teaching experience (college‑level required for senior lecturer).
- General knowledge of foundational documents associated with America’s civic tradition, including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail, and the writings of Adam Smith.
- Commitment to continuous improvement and willingness to implement feedback mechanisms.
- J.D. or Ph.D. in history, political science, or a closely related field.
- Experience teaching foundational civic principles, U.S. founding documents, and constitutional themes.
- Experience facilitating group discussions.
- Thorough knowledge of the same foundational documents listed above.
Teaching – 90%
- Teach four courses each semester (fall and spring).
- Deliver assigned courses at scheduled class meetings according to the curriculum.
- Execute the course syllabus and provide timely, objective grading of assignments, participation, and exams in accordance with WSU policies.
- Maintain accurate, transparent student records.
- Assist and foster student success through regular office hours and timely email responses.
- Adhere to all administrative university policies.
- Engage in professional development to stay current within assigned courses.
- Maintain professional conduct and ethics standards.
Course & Program Building Activities – 10%
- Contribute to development and refinement of the American Civic Literacy course.
- Assist with hiring, training, and scheduling adjuncts for the course.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
