FINANCIAL AID SPECIALIST II

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a Financial Aid Specialist II to serve as the primary counselor to undergraduate and graduate students and as the faculty contact for the schools. Responsibilities include establishing program criteria, awarding loans and scholarships, ensuring student compliance with federal regulations, conducting financial aid orientations, maintaining office hours, managing the alternative/student loan process, and serving as the in‑office contact for various lenders.

Responsibilities

Assist in coordinating and administering student financial aid programs, including file management, computer operations, publications, and scheduling.

Serve as Financial Aid liaison for the School of Optometry, School of Dentistry, and/or School of Medicine, acting as the direct point of contact for interviews, orientations, committees, and posting scholarships.

Process, verify, and award financial aid to recipients; serve on financial committees and make professional judgment decisions as needed.

Manage the alternative student loan certification and disbursement process, posting loan deposits, certifying loan requests from lenders, and monitoring undisbursed funds.

Counsel students and parents on financial aid matters by phone, email, and in person; process loan awards, Title IV reductions, and loan cancellation requests; serve on financial committees; present financial aid at orientations and freshman experience classes.

Maintain current knowledge of federal regulations through regular training and communication with other aid professionals.

Participate in and act as lead to other staff members in awarding financial aid.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for the education requirement.
