CLINICAL LAB ANIMAL VETERINARIAN

The Animal Resource Program (ARP) seeks a Clinical Lab Animal Veterinarian to join its team. The ARP is the primary unit providing care for all animals, and it is used in research and teaching programs at UAB and affiliated hospitals. Operating under the administrative authority of the UAB President, the ARP is managed by the Associate Vice President for Research Facilities and Infrastructure and reports to the Vice President for Research.

It oversees approximately 215,000 square feet of space dedicated to laboratory animal care. In this role, veterinarians will provide clinical and surgical medical care for various animal species used in research and training. Responsibilities include supporting health surveillance and preventative medicine programs, participating in the teaching and training of departmental personnel and research staff, and reviewing animal use requests to ensure compliance with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and animal welfare regulations.

The role also involves supervising veterinary staff, providing emergency veterinary care, and contributing to all laboratory animal care and use program aspects. This includes research, grant writing, equipment and process evaluation, facility tours, and the development of standard operating procedures. This position offers a dynamic and collaborative environment for professionals passionate about laboratory animal care and research.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides clinical and surgical medical care to research animals. Obtains and evaluates the history of veterinary medical and surgical cases. Performs physical assessments and develops diagnostic sampling and therapeutic management proposals of cases. Establishes management protocol and initiates treatment. Provides on-call weekend and emergency care
  • Supervises animal health technician(s), monitors schedules, and assures coverage of responsibilities. Recommends hiring, terminating, and promoting employees and conducts performance evaluation
  • Performs or assists in health assessment and reviews pertinent test results on proposed animal shipments to and from the UAB campus. Discusses colony/herd history or individual health of animals with veterinary and husbandry staff, research personnel or representatives from the facility supplying animals and approves receipt of qualified animals
  • Supervises or assists in quarantining animals of unknown health status and authorizes release from quarantine when appropriate assurances have been confirmed. May provide health assessment for animals prior to intrastate and international shipment. Communicate information to facilitate shipment and oversee shipment and transportation arrangements
  • Maintains appropriate records and assists in report preparation. Reviews animal health records for completion as required by regulations. Assists in the preparation of required regulatory reports
  • Serves as a primary or alternate member of the IACUC. Review animal use requests and consult with faculty and research staff on topics related to animal research. Assures compliance of all animal use requests with accepted veterinary practices and regulatory requirements of the USDA and other applicable regulatory agencies and institutional policies
  • Prepares and presents lectures, seminars, and workshops on a variety of animal care and use topics for UAB staff, students, and community organizations. Manages ARP and IACUC veterinary medical and surgical programs to assure the health, well-being, and humane care of research animals
  • Participates in the development and writing of grants, program descriptions, and scientific publications
  • Interacts with regulatory agents and other guests as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Salary Range: $109,250-$177,530

Qualifications
