The position will support cancer researchers with bioinformatics analysis, computational biology, experimental design, data interpretation, and research publication.
The role involves working closely with investigators throughout the research process—from planning experiments and analyzing high-throughput sequencing data to preparing figures, manuscripts, and grant materials.
Key Responsibilities- Analyze high-throughput genomics datasets, including bulk and single-cell RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, DNA methylation assays, ChIP-seq, whole-genome sequencing, and whole-exome sequencing.
- Work with cancer researchers on experimental design, feasibility, and analysis plans.
- Develop, adapt, and maintain reproducible bioinformatics pipelines.
- Run computational workflows on the University of Florida’s Hi Per Gator high-performance computing cluster.
- Use workflow managers, containers, and version-control systems to support reproducible research.
- Integrate genomic, clinical, and publicly available datasets.
- Apply statistical and computational methods to complex biological datasets.
- Interpret results in collaboration with investigators.
- Prepare figures, methods sections, manuscript content, presentations, and supporting material for research publications.
- Maintain organized project documentation, code repositories, and data-management practices.
- Contribute to workshops, tutorials, and individual training for researchers and trainees.
- Evaluate new bioinformatics tools and methods for potential use within the research unit.
- Doctorate in bioinformatics, computational biology, genetics, molecular biology, computer science, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing high-throughput sequencing data through publications, preprints, dissertation research, or a public code portfolio.
- Proficiency in R and/or Python.
- Working knowledge of Linux command-line tools and shell scripting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with researchers, trainees, industry partners, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience working in a shared research resource or collaborative computational environment.
- Experience managing multiple projects and deadlines.
- Experience with high-performance computing and job schedulers such as SLURM.
- Experience with workflow systems such as Nextflow, Snakemake, or WDL.
- Experience with container technologies such as Docker or Apptainer/Singularity.
- Experience with Git and version control.
- Experience in single-cell or spatial transcriptomics.
- Knowledge of statistical methods used in genomics, including generalized linear models, mixed models, multiple-testing correction, and multi-omic integration.
- Familiarity with databases and resources such as TCGA, GTEx, ENCODE, GEO/SRA, and dbGaP.
- Experience with SQL or relational databases.
- Experience developing software packages for platforms such as Bioconductor, CRAN, or PyPI.
- Experience contributing to federal grant applications.
- Familiarity with HIPAA requirements and controlled-access research datasets.
