Are you ready to join a growing team? Hospital Maintenance is seeking a skilled and experienced candidate to join our hospital services team. This position provides preventative maintenance and minor installations and repairs on hospital equipment, responds to emergency repair requests and breakdowns, ensuring swift resolution to minimize impact on hospital services. As a Hospital Maintenance General Mechanic in UAB Facilities, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the optimal functioning and safety of our healthcare facility.
The ideal candidate should possess a combination of technical skills, attention to detail, and qualities that align with the unique demands of a healthcare environment, while demonstrating a dedication to providing excellent customer service.
Starting Rate: $17.00 - $22.50 (Starting rates are based on our Compensation Guidelines, taking into consideration total relevant, verifiable experience (UAB/UAB Medicine and outside experience), grade minimum, internal equity, and pay ranges).
QualificationsHigh School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience. Applications with incomplete job profiles will not be considered. Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Key attributes- Technical Proficiency: Competency in various maintenance tasks, such as plumbing, electrical work, HVAC systems, and general repairs, is essential. Familiarity with hospital-specific equipment and systems is a plus. Performs minor, routine and preventive maintenance to include operating, cleaning, inspecting, adjusting, tightening, replacing, lubricating, reporting problems, etc., on electrical and mechanical equipment, plumbing systems and fixtures, and building structures and furnishings.
- Adaptability: Hospitals are dynamic environments with specific safety and cleanliness standards. The ideal candidate should be adaptable to changing priorities, emergencies, and be able to work efficiently under pressure.
- Attention to Detail: Maintaining a hospital's infrastructure requires a keen eye for detail. The candidate should be thorough in inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance to ensure a safe and functional environment. Maintains detailed records of equipment maintenance, repairs, and service history in a computerized maintenance software, using a handheld device. Follows and completes work orders and preventative maintenance duties, and provides updates on the work order status.

Hospitals often encounter unexpected maintenance challenges. An ideal candidate should be resourceful and capable of finding innovative solutions to problems quickly and efficiently. - Compliance and Safety Awareness: Familiarity with health and safety regulations, as well as adherence to compliance standards and department’s policies and guidelines, is vital. The candidate should prioritize the well-being of patients, staff, and visitors by maintaining a safe and secure environment. Attends monthly safety meetings, and any other departmental meetings and training. Remains informed about industry best practices and implements them to enhance the efficiency and safety of hospital systems.
- Team Player: Collaboration is key in a hospital setting. The ideal candidate should be able to work well within a team, supporting other departments and responding effectively to maintenance requests. Assists other maintenance personnel in the completion of their work to include: electricians, hvac mechanics, plumbers, etc.
- Punctuality and Reliability: Given the critical nature of hospital operations, being punctual and reliable is crucial. The candidate should be committed to fulfilling their responsibilities consistently and on time. Responds promptly to requests for service from building occupants to include emergencies, hot and cold calls, lighting problems, plumbing problems, minor installations, repairs, adjustments, etc.
