Overview
PLUMBER (Campus Maintenance) Description
The primary accountabilities below describe the general content and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.
Reads, understands and interprets blueprints, drawings, floor plans, schedules and manufacturer's operating and/or maintenance specifications related to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and special equipment, building structures and finishes. Maintains and performs repairs, modifications, replacements and installations on a wide variety of plumbing systems and equipment. Performs corrective, routine, and preventive maintenance including operating, cleaning, inspecting, troubleshooting, adjusting, tightening, replacing, lubricating, reporting problems, and other similar tasks on plumbing systems and equipment.
Installs and maintains natural gas piping. Enters time into departmental systems. May assist other maintenance personnel, including HVAC mechanics, electricians, maintenance technicians, carpenters, masons and others. Responds to maintenance requests from building occupants, including emergencies, installations, modifications, repairs and adjustments, projects, and similar tasks. Performs other duties as directed by Division management and supervision.
Essential Job Functions to Include:
- Maintains and performs repairs, modifications, replacements and installations of Domestic Hot and Cold Water Systems (pumps, piping, valves, dietary equipment, restroom fixtures, filters, water treatment equipment, etc.); HVAC Hot and Chilled Water components (coils, boilers, pipes, valves, heat exchangers, etc.); and Waste Removal Systems (grease traps, piping, sewage processing equipment, sanitary drain lines, traps, sewage ejectors, bed pan washers, and similar equipment).
- Maintains and performs repairs, modifications, replacements and installations of steam and other systems (traps, piping, valves, heat exchangers, condensate return systems, pressure reducing valves, flash tanks, boilers, laundry equipment, and similar equipment); installation and maintenance of natural gas piping.
- Maintains and performs repairs, modifications, replacements and installations of life safety systems and specialized medical and research equipment (fire protection systems, medical gas lines, autoclaves, sterilizers, vacuum systems, and related equipment).
- Responds to maintenance and service requests from building occupants, including emergencies, installations, modifications, repairs and adjustments, and other similar tasks.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Hourly Rate of Pay: $20.80 - $29.94 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications), plus incentive opportunities for Master Plumbers (upon hire) and Medical Gas Licenses (after successfully completing 6-month probationary period).
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm (Subject to change to meet the needs of the University and department).
QualificationsQualifications: Associate s degree or Technical Diploma in a related field, or successful completion of a plumbing apprenticeship training program as defined by the State of Alabama Plumbers & Gas fitters Examining Board, AND three (3) years of related experience including plumbing maintenance with similar facilities. Work experience may substitute for education requirement.

MVR: Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive a vehicle in performance of University business. Current guidelines require a valid US driver s license, at least 21 years old, at least three years of driving experience, and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Currently licensed with a Journeyman Plumber Registration or Master Plumbers License, issued by the State of Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board.
