Police Sergeant – Testing for Future Openings
Division of Public Safety
We are testing for possible future openings in the University of Illinois Police Department. Law enforcement officers who have passed the required tests and are willing to apply for future vacancies should monitor the job board.
Responsibilities- Assist superior in planning, organizing, directing, staffing, coordinating, and reporting activities of subordinate Police Officers assigned to a police patrol shift/unit.
- Assign and brief police officers at the beginning of a shift; patrol the university community observing, supervising, and instructing subordinate officers; respond to police incidents requiring supervisory coordination.
- Provide effective emergency response and take charge of incident control at major incidents in the absence of a senior officer.
- Assist and instruct subordinate officers during investigations or difficult or unusual incidents; review and approve the work of assigned subordinate police officers; evaluate performance and identify training needs.
- Schedule or assist in scheduling subordinate Police Officers for appropriate staffing levels for vacations, sickness, court appearances, special events, etc.
- Assist in the supervision—telecommunicators, security guard officers, and student patrol officers; perform the functions of the superior officer during scheduled and non‑scheduled absences.
- Act as a campus security authority, report Clery Act crimes, and report sexual harassment incidents to Title IX coordinator.
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- No record of conviction of a felony or misdemeanor as identified in the Illinois Police Training Act.
- Eligibility for bonding, if required.
- Successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Officers’ Training course as prescribed by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board.
- Successful completion of the Law Enforcement Officers’ Certification Examination.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Associate’s degree (or 60 semester‑credit hours) in police science, law enforcement, or related curriculum from an accredited institution.
- Two years (24 months) of full‑time experience as a police officer with a recognized merit system.
Skills and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of Illinois criminal statutes, vehicle code, university rules and regulations.
- Ability to understand, carry out, and issue verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to lead officers, enforce laws, and operate a vehicle safely.
- Skill in firearms, defensive tactics, and emergency response.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
This is a 100% full‑time Civil Service 3081 Police Sergeant position, appointed for 12 months. Negotiated hourly rate: $45.98.
