UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA CHAMPAIGN
DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY CLINICAL MEDICINE

About the Position

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois (UIUC) invites applications for a full‑time, 12‑month, open‑rank faculty position in Food Animal Medicine, Reproduction and Surgery. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching (clinical, didactic and laboratory) and clinical service. The position is available as either a tenure‑track or clinical‑track appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative, supportive, and dynamic team of four FARMS (Food Animal Reproductive and Medicine Service) clinicians and additional extension and research faculty committed to excellence in food animal teaching, clinical care, and scholarship. FARMS is a cornerstone of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and maintains strong relationships with local producers and the university’s research and teaching herds.

Clinical

Responsibilities and Caseload

The FARMS service provides comprehensive care for a diverse mix of patients, including dairy and beef cattle (approximately 60% of caseload), small ruminants, camelids, and other production or companion livestock. Clinical duties include internal medicine, common surgical procedures, and basic reproductive service. The caseload balances primary care and complex referral cases, offering a stimulating environment for continued professional growth.

The successful candidate will participate in after‑hours emergency services on a rotating basis with other FARMS faculty, supported by house officers and dedicated technical staff. Consultation and collaboration across specialties (dermatology, cardiology, neurology, etc.) are readily available through the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Teaching and Mentorship

A central part of this role is mentoring and training the next generation of veterinarians and specialists. The appointee will contribute to didactic lectures, clinical skills laboratory, and clinical teaching of DVM students during their 2‑week FARMS rotations throughout the year. Clinical teaching will also involve the supervision and mentorship of house officers, including residents and interns pursuing advanced training.

The Veterinary Clinical Medicine department emphasizes a supportive culture of teaching excellence, with faculty mentorship resources available to help develop innovative instructional approaches and advance pedagogical skills.

Research and Scholarly Opportunities

All faculty are encouraged to engage in scholarly activities aligned with their professional interests. Whether the focus is clinical research, translational science, or educational scholarship, candidates will find abundant collaboration opportunities within FARMS and across the college. The service has a history of academic productivity and mentorship is available to help early‑career faculty build a sustainable research program.

Professional Development and Collegial Environment

Illinois offers a collegial atmosphere where faculty at all career stages are encouraged to grow professionally. New faculty benefit from structured onboarding, mentorship, and protected time for scholarship and service. The College of Veterinary Medicine supports faculty well‑being, professional growth, and work‑life balance in a vibrant Big Ten university community.
