Overview

The Certified Medical Assistant / Registered Medical Assistant performs routine administrative and patient care support duties in a medical practice to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensures that the office runs smoothly.

Qualifications
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Health career Association (NHA)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (ARMA) – American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (AAH) – American Allied Health (AAH)
  • Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT) – National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (AMT) – American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) – National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
  • Education:

Responsibilities
  • Rooming patients:
    Collecting pertinent information regarding the patient's chief complaint, family history, social history, surgical history, and medication reconciliation upon arrival for a patient visit.
  • Telephone interactions:
    Completing necessary telephone communications with patients, families, pharmacies, and/or other health care facilities and maintaining patient information via telephone per department specific processes and policies.
  • Administrative tasks:
    Patient check‑in/out, prior authorizations, scheduling appointments, verification of benefits, coordination of referrals and testing, office procedures as directed and per department specific competencies.
  • Procedures:
    Urine catheterizations, bladder scanning, suture or staple removal, application or removal of casts at provider direction, reading results of negative TB skin tests or steering patient to the care of a department nurse when TB screening appears to have indications of a positive read, and other diagnostic testing at the point of care.
  • Patient instructions:
    Providing written instructions regarding procedures, medications, or follow‑up instructions at provider direction.
  • Medication administration:
    Administering medications per provider order, providing assistance with prescription medication refills per department protocols, calling medications into pharmacies, notifying patients of refills, and documenting actions within the EMR per provider orders.
  • Competency maintenance:
    Maintaining department specific competencies related to point of care testing, equipment handling, and specialty training.
  • Additional duties:
    Completing RX refills and normal lab results from RN worklist, obtaining detailed patient medical histories at prenatal intake appointments, administering vaccine and medications under ordering providers, compounding/diluting medication with competency testing by department educator.
  • Customer service:
    Excelling in customer service, team building, and problem solving abilities.
