Overview

The Monitor Technician's functions include observation, identification, documentation and communication of various cardiac rhythms. The Monitor Technician reports these changes to the patient's assigned nurse and responds to physician inquiries.

Qualifications
  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA), and Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician (CRAT) within 18 months - Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)
  • Education: none required

Responsibilities
  • Continuously observe, evaluate, and recall cardiac rhythms of telemetry patients.
  • Assessment of cardiac rhythm
  • Accurately interpret cardiac rhythms
  • Measure EKG intervals to make accurate cardiac rhythm assessment
  • Recognize dysrhythmias or changes in EKG complex promptly
  • Monitor Q waves, ST segment and QT intervals and note changes
  • Respond to all monitoring outcomes
  • Investigate the cause of any interruption in reception of the heart rhythm
  • Documentation
    • Accurately document EKG rhythm strip at the beginning of each shift
    • Document all changes in rhythms or EKG complex
  • Reporting
    • Give concise, complete end of shift report
    • Give concise, complete EKG rhythm report to the RN caring for the patient on telemetry
    • Report all changes in rhythm and EKG complex to the RN caring for the patient on telemetry
    • Interact with physicians when inquiries are made
    • Report any interruption in reception of heart rhythm
  • Know process for renewal of telemetry
  • Ensure proper function of monitoring equipment, maintain adequate supplies, and use troubleshooting techniques to enhance optimal utilization of equipment
  • Be knowledgeable about monitoring systems
  • Be able to use the functions of the monitoring system and individualize settings to each patient's needs
  • Be able to maneuver video camera to ensure adequate monitoring of seizure patients
  • Correctly enter monitoring changes in the computer
  • Troubleshooting
    • Use problem‑solving skills and past experiences to optimize use of monitoring equipment or to address equipment failure
    • Seek assistance from peers, Nurse Manager or Biomedical Engineering to address equipment concerns
    • Report equipment failures immediately
  • Maintain supplies
  • Maintain responsibility for controlling equipment and supplies
  • Document and track equipment use
  • Report equipment needs to Unit Leader
  • Restock MT supplies as needed
  • Maintain current knowledge of cardiac monitoring and participate in continuing education
  • Knowledge and education
    • Successfully complete certification EKG test and ongoing recertifications
    • Attend required in‑services
    • Participate in unit meetings and in‑services
    • Share information with peers
  • Integration of individual efforts within unity and perform supportive activities to optimize efficient patient care

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $18.89 per hour – $30.6 per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
