Overview
Network Maintenance & Construction Technician I - (Barrow, AK) at GCI Communication Corp.
This entry‑level position focuses on outside network maintenance and construction within telecommunications, with opportunities to advance through company certification programs and training.
Responsibilities- Perform professional installations and servicing of telecommunications solutions (video, high‑speed data, and voice) in residential and commercial settings.
- Oversee system‑wide maintenance and quality control of network signal processing; troubleshoot and resolve issues such as transmission discrepancies, signal loss, interference, and equipment malfunctions.
- Conduct comprehensive network analysis and maintain headend systems to ensure optimal performance.
- Safeguard the integrity of outside plant infrastructure to ensure reliability and efficient service delivery.
- Execute construction, installation, preventive maintenance, testing, and repairs of facilities providing video, voice, and data services; assess field conditions and conduct tests to evaluate signal quality.
- Organize daily workloads, use industry tools and heavy machinery, and collaborate with senior staff to address outages and repair tickets.
- Mentor and assist less experienced technicians; respond to outages and perform other duties as needed.
- Design test fixtures, analyze test results, and document testing performed on components.
- Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Four (4) years of experience in a technical telecommunications role or related field, including:
- At least two (2) years in heavy equipment operation and excavation.
- At least two (2) years in cable splicing.
- At least two (2) years in power supply maintenance.
- At least two (2) years in installation, reconfiguration, and maintenance of fiber optic transport equipment.
- At least two (2) years in aerial and underground construction, including fault location testing.
- Certification Requirements: NAZ power safety training or obtain within one (1) year; may be required to complete other certifications (e.g., Defensive Driving, Pole Climbing, AK DOT certifications) within designated time frames.
- Travel Requirements:
Must possess a current passport or obtain one upon hiring.
- Preferred: Associate degree in Electronics or related field, telecommunications trade school completion, or equivalent training; additional telecom experience or certifications.
Physical Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and insurance; may require a commercial license within six months.
- Work includes exposure to extreme Arctic weather, heights up to 40 feet, trenches up to 10 feet, and working around high‑power electrical conductors.
- Ability to lift and move heavy equipment, operate hand tools, and use test equipment; ability to communicate clearly and work shifts, including overtime and on‑call as needed.
- Travel may be required to work in other systems across the state.
- Drug and alcohol testing may be required (DOT or non‑DOT) for contract or client requirements; fitness for duty and possibly DOT/commercial driver requirements.
