Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) is a young and growing Economics department. The position of the Chair in Banking and Finance contributes to the (inter) national reputation and profile of U.S.E. in line with its multidisciplinary vision on research, teaching, and impact in the area of banking and finance. The Chair plays a crucial role in strengthening the international research profile and expertise of U.S.E. and its Finance section.
Your job
The main goal of the Chair in Banking and Finance is to further advance research (aligned with the relevant UU strategic themes, mainly “Institutions for Open Societies ” and/or “Pathways to Sustainability ”), and education in the relevant fields of expertise. Apart from their own research, we expect the Chair to play a stimulating role in the USE research community; to promote a research environment in line with USE’s aims for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion;
and to attract external research funding through grants and/or consulting. Additional duties include supervision of PhD Candidates and mentoring of (Post-Doctoral) researchers resulting in state-of-the-art PhD-manuscripts and publications, and the transfer of knowledge to society by organizing events (such as conferences and workshops). Teaching of the chair will connect the field with other relevant disciplines, in line with U.S.E.’s Real World Perspective.
Cooperation with other USE sections and other departments and faculties within UU in teaching and research is strongly encouraged. The tasks and responsibilities of the Chair will include:
- Performing and encouraging scientific research in the field of Banking and Finance;
- Supervision of PhD students and post-Doctoral researchers;
- Participating in education in the U.S.E. Bachelor and Master programs, as well as executive education;
- Leadership in contributing to the research and teaching climate, including stimulating and supervising multidisciplinary research and teaching;
- Contributing to the financial sustainability of U.S.E., including active participation in external fundraising.
The person we are looking for is a passionate and creative academic with a strong background in finance and a genuine interest in Banking and Finance. Given the current developments in this field, knowledge/research on digital/data science and AI, and the impact upon Finance – including its role for enabling societal transitions - is highly valued. We expect the chair to have a vision on the impact of data and societal transitions on finance and the financial industry.
The person should be able to integrate digital knowledge in courses in the academic Finance master programs.
The ideal candidate for this position has a strong publication record and teaching experience in the field of Banking and/or Finance. The candidate is also willing and able to reach out to researchers active in other fields, such as economics and management. This requires an open and inquisitive mind, and a willingness to experiment and explore new avenues and methods in research and academic teaching.
We anticipate that the candidate is willing and able to communicate complex scientific results and insights to an audience of policy makers, societal stakeholders, and the wider public; proven ability in this respect is considered a plus.
The following profile will be expected of the chair holder:
- A doctorate in the field of finance or economics;
- A strong track record in research, as demonstrated among others by publications in internationally recognised journals, a high number of citations, and preferably membership of policy advisor bodies (e.g. CEPR, NBER, etc);
