This is a fixed‑term post comprising 8 Direct Clinical Activities and 2 Supporting Professional Activities that provide outpatient Hepatology, inpatient Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Endoscopy services. The post‑holder will be on call for the acute gastrointestinal bleeding rota covering THH and Harefield Hospital on a 1 week in 7‑8 basis, dependent upon recruitment. The role attracts an additional 1 PA and, ultimately, a 0.5PA reduction when the Harefield commitment is removed.
There is an availability uplift for on‑call from THHFT (5 %). There is no General Medical on‑call commitment for this post. Applicants must hold a CCT in Gastroenterology and GIM or be within 6 months of CCT to be eligible to apply for the post.
- Provide comprehensive Hepatology and Gastroenterology services in partnership with the Gastroenterology and Hepatology consultants and other health‑care professionals.
- Review and vet Hepatology referrals and conduct patient reviews in clinics (face‑to‑face, telephone, or virtual).
- Participate in the bleeding rota and provide emergency out‑of‑hours GI cover for Harefield Hospital and Hillingdon Hospital; future planning includes potential on‑site commitment.
- Collaborate with the team to run inpatient and outpatient services for Hepatology and general gastroenterology, including an advisory service for colleagues.
- Attend relevant multidisciplinary team meetings, such as Gastro Radiology, Upper GI cancer MDT, West London Histopathology, and other appropriate pan‑NWL/NCL meetings.
- Participate in the training and professional development of medical and other professional staff, contribute to postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programmes, and support General Practitioner education.
- Maintain personal continuous professional development (CPD) and revalidation, ensuring alignment with guidance from relevant professional bodies and clinical governance frameworks.
- Assist the department in achieving JAG accreditation and meeting national waiting‑time targets.
- Provide clear evidence of supervised professional activity (SPA), including clinical and educational supervision, audit, and personal CPD; perform or lead at least one medical audit per year.
- Encourage development of specialist expertise in Hepatology aligned with departmental needs.
- Participate in the medical advisory and liaison work of the hospital Consultant Staff Committee and other committees (e.g., Clinical Governance, Safeguarding Adults, Transfusion, Resuscitation, Medicines Management).
- Collaborate with the Lead Clinician and Senior Nurse Management to develop and implement all relevant policies for departmental operations.
- Work with the consultant team in the recruitment and appointment of junior medical staff, guide deployment and supervision of junior duties, and support use of Trust digital systems.
Required Qualifications
- Full GMC registration.
- Experience of working in the NHS.
- Must have a CCT in Gastroenterology and Medicine or be within six months of attaining one.
- Encouraged to participate in the post‑graduate and undergraduate teaching programme and in GP education.
- Expected to pursue ongoing CPD activities and contribute to revalidation processes.
- Will be encouraged to develop areas of special interest within Hepatology that support departmental service needs.
The post has been created due to the increased workload generated by liver disease detection programmes such as the Emergency Department Blood Borne Virus programme and RM Partners Hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance/early detection programme. This role is part of the Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the only acute hospital in the London Borough of Hillingdon, which offers a wide range of services including accident and emergency, inpatient care, day surgery, outpatient clinics and maternity services.
