We have a vacancy in Hillingdon for a full‑time Band 5 community staff nurse in the School Nursing Service.
The School Nursing Service is part of the 0‑19 service in Hillingdon and is recognised for delivering an innovative and progressive service. Hillingdon is a richly diverse outer London borough, offering both challenges and rewards for practitioners. You must hold a first‑level registration (adult, mental health or child branch) or be due to qualify shortly.
Responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities- Deliver the Healthy Child Programme.
- Undertake holistic health needs assessments of children across a wide range of environments.
- Interpret, analyse and collate complex information, liaising with children, young people and families, local school nurses and other services.
- Implement and monitor a plan of care using evidence‑based criteria, adapting plans to maximise health benefits.
- Provide skilled, evidence‑based nursing care in line with agreed policies and procedures.
- Provide ongoing support for individuals and families, reporting back to senior colleagues when delegated.
- Signpost and refer to specialist services for support and intervention.
- Help children, parents and carers to identify their own level of knowledge and skill, offering support to adopt healthy lifestyles.
- Communicate effectively with children, parents, carers and other professionals, using excellent communication skills.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive record keeping in line with NMC guidance and Trust policy.
- Apply Information Sharing and Assessment protocols, discerning relevance and promoting child safety.
- Communicate considering culture, ethnicity, language, disabilities and developmental age.
- Engage with children, families, social care, education, colleagues and other professionals.
- Manage records in line with Trust health records policy and NMC guidelines.
- Use the Trust IT systems (Outlook, Systm One) and attend training to ensure proficiency.
- Maintain knowledge of infection control procedures and implement recommendations.
- Participate in team discussions and support service developments.
- Maintain up‑to‑date registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct.
- Critically reflect on performance through clinical supervision.
- Meet personally with senior staff for appraisal and ongoing professional development.
- Keep mandatory training and safeguarding training current, attending meetings and supervision sessions.
- Monitor practice to maintain specialist knowledge via further education and study days.
- Acknowledge personal distress in emotive circumstances and seek support from colleagues or Trust services.
- Act as a role model, contributing to a high‑performing team through communication, encouragement of peer reflection, and implementation of audit and benchmarking initiatives.
- Work confidently as an autonomous practitioner and also as a team member, supporting less experienced nurses and staff.
- Current NMC Registration (Adult, Mental Health or Child branch) or about to qualify.
- Evidence of relevant continuous professional development.
- Teaching or mentoring skills.
- Numeracy skills for safe medicine administration.
- Experience as a Band 5 nurse or student nurse.
- Experience working with multi‑disciplinary teams.
- Experience managing own caseload without direct supervision.
- Experience with safeguarding children.
- Experience in health promotion and group facilitation (desirable).
- Strong communication skills; able to discuss sensitive issues and provide support.
- Accurate record keeping (electronic and handwritten).
- Proficient in care planning and safeguarding.
- Understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
- Ability to travel to multiple sites; access to car or other vehicle and full UK driving licence.
- Effective team working and collaborative skills.
- Preceptorship programme for newly qualified staff.
