The Equipment Operator performs skilled and semiskilled tasks in the repair, maintenance, and construction of the Putah South Canal and District distribution systems. This role involves operating and transporting heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, loaders, and boom trucks for tasks like trenching, reshaping canals, and lifting large components. Operators provide technical support for equipment maintenance, train others in safe operation, and offer leadership in field settings.
The position requires independent judgment, adherence to safety standards, and the ability to work in varied outdoor conditions, including confined spaces. Occasional emergency and standby duties may be needed.
The ideal candidate has experience loading, unloading, stacking, and carrying materials and supplies for placement. They possess the skills to operate various types of vehicles for hauling supplies, materials, and equipment, including those with power attachments for tasks like shaping canal banks and excavating. The ideal candidate will be capable of performing work with minimal oversight, while also demonstrating the ability to collaborate as part of a team when needed.

Salary InformationSalary Range: $36.32 - $51.16 (Range 138 – 150)
Salary placement is based on the number of qualifying licenses and certifications held. Candidates without certifications will be placed at the entry level range.
Qualifying Licenses andCertifications:
- Tanker Vehicle Endorsement (N) – Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Training
- California State Water Resources Control Board Grade Level D-2
- ACWA JPIA Operations Certification
- No certifications = $36.32 - $44.17 (Range 138)
- 1 certification = $38.09 - $46.33 (Range 142)
- 2 certifications = $40.10 - $48.71 (Range 146)
- 3 certifications = $42.09 - $51.16 (Range 150)
Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities stated above and the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Experience and EducationTypical qualifying entrance background is:
- Two (2) years of experience in laboring work which has provided some familiarity with the operation and uses of heavy construction or maintenance equipment, hand and power tools common to a mechanical, metal or building trade.
- Three (3) years of operating heavy equipment.
- Graduation from high school or equivalent.
- Possession of a valid Class A California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record to maintain insurability.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within nine (9) months of date of hire, valid Boom Truck Certification.
- Possession and maintenance of a Grade Level 2 - Distribution Operator Certificate (D2) issued by the State of California State Water Resources Control Board is preferred.

Retirement – Solano Irrigation District participates in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS).
- Classic Members: 2%@60 formula with final compensation based on the highest 36 consecutive months and credit for unused sick leave. Employee contributes 7%.
- New Members: 2%@62 formula with a 3-year final compensation period and credit for unused sick leave. Employee contributes 6.75%.
Retiree Health Insurance – Employees are eligible for retiree health insurance benefits following 10 years of full-time service.
Deferred Compensation – 457 plan available, with Employer match up to $100 per pay period.
Health Insurance – Plans include Anthem Blue Cross HMO and PPO plans and a Kaiser Permanente plan. The District pays a portion of the premium for employee and dependent coverage.
