POSITION SUMMARY:

The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (TOD/DHH) provides a comprehensive educational program to meet the needs of students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing in a school setting. Responsible for teaching students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing in all grades (P-12).

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS, QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND

WORK EXPERIENCE:

To be considered for the role of Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, candidates must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field from an accredited institution, with advanced degrees (Master’s, Specialist, or Doctorate) preferred. Applicants must possess or be eligible for a Georgia Professional Standards Commission Certification in Special Education Deaf Education and Special Education General Curriculum (P-12).

While three years of experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing is recommended, strong candidates will also have a proven ability to provide professional development, technical assistance, and coaching to educators, related service providers, and parents.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assesses and documents students’ educational needs to develop and implement appropriate instructional plans for students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing (e.g., IEPs).
  • Develops appropriate instructional materials for students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing.
  • Utilizes acceptable and innovative instructional techniques and practices for students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing
  • Teaches DHH students who are also blind, VI, or multi handicapped.
  • Responsible for writing, implementing, and monitoring progress on Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) goals.
  • Prepares and implements curriculum materials for appropriate instruction.
  • Depending on assignment, the teacher may give necessary direction to classroom aides and assist and/or direct assistants in providing support to students during self-help activities such as toileting and feeding.
  • Works with a variety of support services to provide accommodations and modifications for students, including such items as mobility, positioning, fine motor activities, and/or job training as appropriate.
  • Prepares and collects homework assignments.
  • Completes progress reports.
  • Conducts student evaluations, assessments, and makes recommendations on instructional materials and refers students for evaluation, counseling, and other support services.
  • Participates in extracurricular activities/assignments.
  • Keeps appropriate records.
  • Establishes an effective behavior management system for all students.
  • Monitors and reports all safety concerns to the supervisor.
  • Works with other teachers and support personnel in curriculum planning and implementation to provide an integrated and well-rounded instruction program for each student.
  • Maintains effective communication with parents and other support staff.
  • Pursues professional development opportunities focusing on the education of students with hearing impairments.
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours and as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the administrator or supervisor.
  • Follows all federal laws, state laws, and School Board policies.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Designated students, paraprofessionals, aides, volunteers, therapists, and contracted personnel.
