Job Summary

The lead phlebotomist is responsible for performing non‑clinical, routine tasks associated with drawing blood from patients for the purpose of conducting tests as part of their diagnostic evaluation.

Responsibilities
  • Skill and ability in locating and puncturing appropriate veins in patients and recognizing signs of negative reaction.
  • Ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e‑mail and database software in performing work assignments; read/write/speak/understand English to perform essential duties.
  • Plan and coordinate operation of the Phlebotomy Dept., ensuring adequate staffing, equipment, supplies and all other related administrative functions.
  • Ensure compliance with lab standards and safety; review standard operating procedures manual for Phlebotomy to ensure effective operations.
  • Oversee and evaluate the work of Phlebotomy staff, providing instruction, guidance and expertise in the area of specialization.
  • Implement process improvement initiatives, maintain regulatory compliance within the laboratory, and work with the medical staff to monitor and continue to improve quality.
  • Establish effective communication between hospital patient units and the lab for efficient transfer of information, both urgent and regular, and on ordering of tests.
  • Provide orientation, training and evaluation for new Phlebotomists, students and Residents.
  • Ensure staff competence in performing duties of Inpatient and Outpatient areas; complete all phlebotomy employee competencies in a timely manner.
  • Assist in monitoring/maintaining phlebotomy inventory and justify any budget variances, especially regarding overtime.
  • Keep the Lab Manager informed of all phlebotomy activities and personnel problems; build strong working relationships with internal and/or external customers to meet customer needs.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • Experience drawing blood preferred.
  • Experience as a lead or supervisor highly recommended.
  • High school or equivalency diploma or satisfactory completion of training in phlebotomy as verified by the Director of Clinical Laboratories.
  • Phlebotomy certificate required.
