Responsibilities
  • Under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse, provide direct patient care to an assigned group of patients.
  • Prepare patients for treatment and procedures.
  • Assist in the general care of patients.
  • Provide care according to individualized care plans and directives from a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Deliver end‑of‑shift face‑to‑face hand–offs to incoming nursing aides.
  • Report to supervising nurse when duties cannot be completed on the shift.
  • Observe, record, and report general condition of patients.
  • Identify significant changes in patient clinical status and communicate to the treatment team.
  • Perform non‑sterile dressing changes as directed by a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Meet patient needs for comfort and safety with orientation and time‑appropriate stimuli.
  • Assist with patient nutritional and hydration needs, including meal setup, feeding, and supplemental nutrition.
  • Assist in patient admission, welcoming them to the unit and aiding in transfers.
  • Assist in patient discharge by gathering belongings and removing medical equipment as directed.
  • Obtain vital signs and weights, collect specimens and finger sticks, record results, and notify nurses of abnormal results.
  • Maintain intake/output documentation for various patient needs.
  • Assist patients with meals, sleep, hygiene, and activities of daily living.
  • Assist the Registered Professional Nurse with turning patients every two hours.
  • Respond to intercom requests and obtain needed services from nurses, physicians, or other hospital personnel.
  • Implement nursing safety interventions and use protective devices for patients at risk of injury.
  • Transport patients to and from tests, procedures or therapeutic activities.
  • Maintain and restock nursing servers during each shift.
  • Comply with hospital policies and procedures regarding patient equipment, supplies, and personal belongings.
  • Participate in classes, patient‑centered conferences, workshops, and unit/department meetings as directed.
Qualifications
  • Good knowledge of accepted standards of caring for and comforting the sick, disabled, injured or others requiring mental health or personal assistance.
  • Skill in customer service related to healthcare delivery.
  • Ability to prioritize patient care using time and resources efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, co‑workers, and all members of the healthcare team.
  • Ability to handle individual and critical situations effectively.
  • Ability to maintain personal composure when unit priorities change quickly.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and communicate patient information verbally and in writing.
  • Computer literacy sufficient to perform duties.
  • Good judgment, tact, initiative, positive attitude, neatness.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Required Education & Experience
  • Either: (a) Certification as a Nurse Aide or Home Health Aide by the New York State Department of Health;
  • (b) Completion of an approved Nurse Aide or related patient care course;
  • (c) Completion of Medical‑Surgical Nursing I and II or equivalent from an accredited Licensed Practical or Registered Nurse school;
  • (d) One year of patient care experience.
Special Requirements

BLS or CPR certification by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross must be obtained within 90 days of employment and maintained throughout subsequent employment in this title.
