Position: Adventure Course Facilitator - Camp Butternut Springs

Adventure Course Facilitator – Camp Butternut Springs

Join the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago & Northwest Indiana outdoor program staff today! Camp Butternut Springs is a place where energetic and passionate staff come together to provide a safe and positive learning environment for girls ages 5‑17.

As a camp Adventure Course Facilitator, you will supervise and guide campers and counselors through progressive teambuilding, low‑challenge course activities, and high‑adventure course activities (climbing wall, zipline, high ropes) on the Albert C. Hanna Adventure Course.

Work Commitment
  • Dates:
    June 1 – August 2, 2026 (includes staff training)
  • Camp closed June 19 and July 4‑6; these days are unpaid.
  • Staff may begin work as early as March 23 and end as late as October to assist with weekend adventure course programming for user groups.
Typical Weekly Schedule
  • Sunday 11:00 a.m. – Friday 7:00 p.m.
  • Daily 2‑hour break Monday‑Thursday.
  • Staff who commute work 40 hours a week, typically 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.; exact shifts determined with the Camp Director.
  • Saturday, August 1, is required; additional Saturday work on July 11 and July 25 is available.
  • March‑May and August‑October work usually takes place Friday evenings – Sunday afternoons.
Camp Staff Benefits
  • Pay: $115 per day ($105 per day if commuting).

Qualifications
  • Loves to interact with children and has prior experience working with children of various ages.
  • Enjoys spending time outdoors and has prior experience working in an outdoor setting.
  • Must be 18 years or older as of June 1 , 2026, and possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Prior experience or interest in facilitating teambuilding activities, low‑ropes course programs focused on teamwork, trust, and cooperation, belaying, rock climbing, and high‑ropes course programs.
  • Current ropes‑course instructor certification or ability to complete adventure course facilitator training at our facility.
  • Must attend, participate in, and successfully demonstrate required skills during pre‑season mandatory adventure course facilitator training in March.
  • Willingness to live and work in an indoor and outdoor camp setting, including irregular hours, limited or simple equipment, rustic facilities, wildlife and insects, limited technology, and daily exposure to sun, rain, and other weather conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Provide fun, positive, and active leadership to campers.
  • Help build a supportive environment where campers can grow, make new friends, and try new things.
  • Role model problem‑solving, collaboration, and initiative to campers.
  • Plan, teach, coordinate, and carry out low and high ropes activities.
  • Teach and monitor proper use of climbing tower and ropes course elements and equipment.
  • Follow standard ropes‑course rules; ensure all campers and staff learn and understand all safety rules.
  • Assist in daily safety checks of climbing tower and ropes course equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining equipment logs, indicating repairs and retiring equipment promptly.
  • Assist in managing physical operations of all ropes courses and related equipment.
  • Assist with setup of the ropes course prior to and during staff training as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
