Police Officer – Valparaiso University
Performs a variety of routine and complex police and public safety work including preventive patrol, community policing activities, criminal investigations, vehicle crash investigations, enforcement of federal, state and university statutes and regulations, traffic control activities, safety checks, event and site security, and response to medical and fire calls. Supports the mission of Valparaiso University Police Department to ensure the safety, security, well‑being and retention of students, faculty, staff, guests and property.
MajorResponsibilities
- Patrol the Valparaiso University campus and nearby city streets on foot, bicycle, ATV or in a police vehicle to preserve law and order, prevent and discover crime and assist citizens in need.
- Answer calls for service and investigate complaints impartially.
- Investigate crimes, campus rules, and regulation violations, legally arrest persons, issue citations, and participate in prosecutions or campus judicial processes.
- Provide campus policing services (safety programming, Clery reporting, funeral escort, animal control, medical and fire assistance, motorist assistance, and other services).
- Perform security protection and traffic control for events and activities on and near campus, including uniform and undercover details.
- Complete all required reports accurately and promptly.
- Hold an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy certification or equivalent law enforcement academy/experience.
- At least 2 years of law enforcement experience.
- Must be able to adapt to changes and perform duties under life‑threatening or high‑stress environments.
- Minimum of a high school education and a current driver’s license.
- Logical and critical thinking to solve problems and interpret instructions.
- Effective verbal and written communication in English with the police department, campus community, and the general public.
- Ability to learn applicable laws, ordinances, campus policies, rules, regulations and department procedures (SOPs) and perform work requiring good physical condition.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors.
Background checks may include criminal history, motor vehicle reports, prior employment verification, personal/professional references and, if applicable, credit history. Background checks will be conducted on all final candidates for employment.
