Job Summary
This shared position between Koerner Library, Law Library, David Lam Management Research Library (DLam), and Canaccord Learning Commons (CLC) supports moderately complex public services in the circulation of library materials and equipment, information services, collections processing, and maintenance of library facilities. The role works various shifts, including evenings and weekends, primarily handling patron service, circulation duties, and emergency response.
Work Performed and Duties Circulation, Public, and Information Services- Perform full range of circulation duties: charging, discharging, renewing library materials and equipment, managing holds, recalls, and storage requests.
- Retrieve items for users and couriers; reinstate or suspend borrowers; accept fines and respond to invoice queries.
- Check returned materials for holds, damage, and completeness; add and change barcodes; approve reserve loan extensions.
- Assist users with equipment lending, guest IDs, and access processes; trace missing items.
- Issue and renew all categories of library cards, verify eligibility, create or amend patron records.
- Resolve card and patron problems or refer users appropriately.
- Perform opening and closing procedures, alone or with a colleague.
- Provide routine information assistance: answer location, holdings, program, and service queries; demonstrate catalog and website navigation; refer complex queries to librarians or Ask Away.
- Monitor CLC Help Desk email as needed; record reference and branch statistics; interpret and modify user and circulation records.
- Explain and enforce library policies; troubleshoot basic equipment, computer, and network issues; operate copiers and printers; place service calls.
- Assist with maintenance of library appearance, clean public computer screens, peripherals, and furnishings; report issues to Manager or Supervisor.
- Participate in facility repairs and custodial requests; troubleshoot equipment, resolve problems, and arrange repairs.
- Support library events: assist with bookings, registration, room set‑up, audio‑visual and equipment setup; handle troubleshooting.
- Act as the evening/weekend point of contact for circulation system assistance at Koerner; diagnose problems and escalated to Manager, Koerner Library, and Library IT.
- Monitor security systems and building alarms; respond to emergencies, thefts, incidents; coordinate with Plant Operations, Patrol, RCMP, or 911 when necessary.
- Perform moderately complex stacks maintenance: shelving, straightening, shelf reading, cleaning, shifting materials.
- Contribute to preservation: dusting, vacuuming books and shelves; process and transport materials.
- Assist organization of the collection: shift materials for growth and planned moves; measure linear footage and edit online records.
- Assist monograph acquisition: check the catalogue, SUMMON, or other sources for duplicates.
- Prepare library materials: tattle‑tape, barcoding, binding, spine‑labelling, stamping; enter circulation and processing data.
- Update looseleaf services and supplemental materials; assist routine mail services and document delivery retrieval.
- Retrieve and copy interlibrary loan request materials; search catalogue for available copies.
- Assist processing of gift items; check holdings for duplicates, missing, or damaged volumes.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required during staff absences.
- Participate in library operational working groups or committees as approved.
- Exercise judgement, creativity, and independence within established procedures; monitor adherence to policies.
- Support emergency or crisis situations, ensuring safe and calm resolution.
- High school graduation, plus a two‑year Library Technician diploma, plus two years related experience; or an equivalent combination.
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives and a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Ability to follow instructions, sort and file accurately; intermediate proficiency in email, word processing, spreadsheets, and library systems (MS Office, Voyager).
- Proficiency with library equipment, voice and network troubleshooting.
- Strong communication, calmness in emergencies, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Capacity to lift up to 20kg and work a five‑day week, including evenings and weekends.
- Commitment to building respectful relationships and maintaining a diverse workplace.
- Knowledge of Library policies, procedures, and systems.
- Experience in bibliographic records and online searching protocols.
- Academic law library experience.
- Ability to operate a range of library equipment and troubleshoot complex technical issues.
- Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with diverse staff and users.
