The Associate Physician, Acute Mental Health Team, practices under the direction and supervision of an attending Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at BCChildren’s Hospital. The Associate Physician provides assessment and short-termtreatment for patients who present with mental health concerns to the hospital’sEmergency Department (ED), are admitted to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Emergency (CAPE) Unit, and/or followed in the Link Urgent Mental Health Clinic(the Link).

As an integral member of BC Children’s Hospital’s Acute Mental Health Team, the Associate Physician will provide support that increases capacity and service delivery in the Acute Mental Health service, through each of these mental health services (emergency, unit, clinic). The Associate Physician will be a full member of the Department of Psychiatry at BC Children’s Hospital.

• Participate in ED mental health rounds, including mental health nursing,social work and psychiatry, as well as medical learners.
• Support other areas of the Acute Mental Health Team in the Link and CAPE Unitas needed, when the ED is not busy.
• Assist in the triage of patient presentations to the ED in consideration ofED team referral to the Link Clinic for follow up and assessment within 72hours.
• Perform and document psychiatric assessments, risk assessments, medicationreconciliation, and safety planning for patients referred to Mental Health bythe Emergency Physician. These tasks must meet Royal College and organizational standards, policies, and guidelines.

• Complete referrals to community resources and/or the Link at BC Children’sHospital.
• Communicate with caregiver families, consultant physicians, Emergency Physicians, and community care resources and Family Physicians regarding patient management plans.

• Provide teaching and supervision for medical students, residents, patient sand families, as well as interdisciplinary staff within and outside of theED.
• Participate in quality improvement projects improving care for this patient population, including participation in Morbidity & Mortality rounds and other
  
  Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance or research sessions.
• Participate in appropriate professional development activities (a minimum of50 hours per year, 25 hours of which must be accredited training recognized by the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons’ Maintenance of Certification Program for specialty health care professionals or the BC College of Family Physicians Maintenance of Certification Program.

This position requires a medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Applicants must have completed a minimum of twoyears of accredited postgraduate training in Psychiatry (General, Adult, or Child and Adolescent), Pediatrics, or Family Medicine, with training verified tothe satisfaction of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia(CPSBC). Applicants must meet the CPSBC English language proficiencyrequirements, demonstrate current clinical practice as required by CPSBC, and be eligible for licensure in the Associate Physician class.

Applicants must also be Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, or legally authorized to liveand work in British Columbia.
