Come work as a Surgical Oncologist with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!
The Division of General Surgery at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) invites applications for a full‑time position in general surgical oncology, with a focus on the management of peritoneal malignancies, beginning July 1, 2027.
The successful candidate will join the Division of General Surgery at the University of British Columbia (UBC), with a clinical practice based at Vancouver General Hospital and UBC Hospital (UBCH). VGH is the qua ternary referral centre for the province of British Columbia. The Division comprises 22 general surgeons with expertise in trauma, acute care surgery, surgical oncology, abdominal wall reconstruction, complex gastrointestinal surgery, and hepatobiliary and transplant surgery.
Clinical Responsibilities
Elective clinical responsibilities will include directing the clinical care and surgical management of patients across all areas of surgical oncology, including breast, cutaneous, soft tissue, and gastrointestinal malignancies. Additional training in the management of peritoneal malignancies, including cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), is preferred. Endoscopy privileges can be granted as part of the practice, if desired.
Close multidisciplinary collaboration is expected with specialties including, but not limited to, medical and radiation oncology, and plastic, urologic, orthopedic, and spine surgery. Participation in the Acute Care Surgery service and general surgery call at VGH is required. Compensation is on a fee‑for‑service basis.
Academic Responsibilities
The candidate will contribute to a collaborative, patient‑centred care program and is encouraged to engage in database development, patient‑reported outcome measurement, and integrated care model design.
The candidate will join the Integrated Practice Unit (IPU) for peritoneal malignancies at VGH, helping to build multidisciplinary infrastructure that optimises the experience and outcomes of surgical oncology patients. Teaching responsibilities include training general surgery residents and surgical oncology fellows, as well as teaching medical students.
Academic productivity is expected including peer‑reviewed publications, national and international conference presentations, trainee research mentorship, and participation in quality improvement initiatives. Protected academic time may be available, depending on academic productivity.
Qualifications
Education, Licensing, & Experience :
Current College of Physicians of BC (CPSBC)
Completion of a residency program in general surgery and fellowship training in complex general surgical oncology
Eligibility for licensure in the province of British Columbia
Demonstrated academic productivity, including peer‑reviewed publications and national/international conference presentations
Experience in advanced research methodology and statistical analysis
A graduate degree (MSc or PhD) is preferred
As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly‑funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
