Student Development Coordinator
The Student Engagement & Learning (SEL) Portfolio provides a wide range of holistic opportunities and services, which facilitate students’ personal and academic development as they transition into, progress through, and advance beyond university life. SEL strives to deliver inclusive, responsive, and barrier-free opportunities that promote feelings of belonging and deep connections to community, enhance students’ approach to studying and learning, and engage the student community in peer-to-peer and experiential education.
The SEL portfolio has four core functions:
Community Service Learning, Orientation & Transitions, Student Engagement, and Learning Resources; and operates out of two spaces: the Student Learning Hub and the Student Experience Office.
This position is an integral member of the Student Engagement and Learning team and plays a key role in enhancing and supporting students’ lives outside of the classroom, including opportunities for intellectual, academic, personal, and social development. The Student Development Coordinator will be assigned a portfolio of programs and services, and will work closely with students, staff, faculty, and other student affairs areas in developing and facilitating their assigned duties.
This position also assists other Coordinators and Managers across the Student Engagement and Learning team to plan, implement, and execute a wide range of events, services and programs for students including orientation, transition, and retention programs; student recruitment, selection, and training programs; student engagement and academic support services; individual and group learning experiences; and student-led initiatives.
Organizational Status
This position reports to a designated Manager within Student Engagement and Learning, with potential dotted-line accountability to additional Managers based on assigned programs. The role collaborates closely with colleagues across the Student Engagement and Learning portfolio to deliver high-quality, student-centered services and programs that enhance the overall student experience.
This position works collaboratively with institutional partners, faculties, and units within the Associate Vice President, Student (AVPS) portfolio, and provides supervision to student employees and/or volunteers. The role requires cooperation with staff, students, and faculty to establish and achieve shared goals. It may also engage with external service providers and community organizations to support the successful coordination and delivery of programs and activities across online, on-campus, and off-campus environments.
Work Performed
Leads the development, coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of a defined portfolio of programs and services, which may include academic learning supports, orientation and transition initiatives, community service learning, and student engagement activities, events, and services.
Ensures cohesive and consistent delivery of programs by proactively coordinating with other areas within Student Engagement and Learning and identifying opportunities to streamline or enhance services.
Maintains all required certifications and ensures compliance with relevant standards, guidelines, and University policies.
Oversees the recruitment, selection, administration, and hiring processes for student staff, ensuring compliance with HR policies, equity-based hiring practices, and operational requirements.
Coordinates the design, planning, and delivery of leader training and professional development programs, including identifying training needs, organizing workshops, and ensuring training materials and logistics are effectively managed in collaboration with campus partners.
Serves as a key liaison between student leaders and campus partners, supporting effective communication, issue resolution, and successful coordination of events and initiatives.
Provides day-to-day direction and operational oversight of student staff, including scheduling, performance monitoring, coaching, and fostering ongoing leadership development.
Builds and sustains strong collaborative relationships with key internal stakeholders including faculties, AVP Students units, and other University departments, to advance shared goals and enhance student engagement.
Partners with the AVPS Communications team to plan, develop, and deliver strategic, student-focused communications aligned with institutional priorities.
Contributes to the design and execution of student-focused promotional strategies that raise awareness and increase participation in programs and services.
Coordinates data collection, reporting, and evaluation activities and develops performance measures to assess and improve the effectiveness and impact of programs, services, and operational processes.
Participates actively in program analysis, problem-solving, and operational decision-making by identifying issues, recommending solutions, and supporting implementation.
