Future Science Leaders (FSL) is Science World’s flagship youth science and leadership program. In this program, students are part of a powerful peer network made up of some of BC’s most talented students. Students meet and learn from BC’s top science, technology, and business leaders and are supported by a team of staff and volunteer mentors

Position

Description:

The Future Science Leaders (FSL) Teaching and Laboratory Assistant performs duties to support both classroom and laboratory learning in the Year 1 program and helps to create an engaging and positive learning space. Working as a member of a larger team which includes the Program Manager, Experiential Learning Specialist, and Program Facilitators, they must both be able to collaborate and take initiative.

The FSL Year 1 (Discover) program invites grade 10 and 11 students to participate in learning and skill‑building activities in a wide variety of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Design, Math) topics led by FSL staff and by guest experts. Through working on inquiry projects in peer groups, they develop a foundation in research, analysis and communication skills.

The FSL Teaching Assistant must be comfortable working with and mentoring high school students (Grades 10-11, class size 20-25) who are learning STEAM topics at a university level.

This position requires an approachable, organized, and self‑motivated individual who can observe needs and step in to assist. No previous experience is necessary as a teaching or laboratory assistant. The successful candidate will model curiosity, creativity, and a growth mindset for program participants.

As a facility, Science World is generally open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months. Typical office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am – 5:30pm, with front‑facing and operational teams also working a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings. Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs, and this may include special events on evenings, weekends and holidays.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend the Discover (Year
    1) program sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm-9:00pm, with a total of 10 hours each week. Note that two sessions run consecutively from 4:00pm-6:00pm and 6:30pm-8:30pm on both Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • Work with the Experiential Learning Specialist and Facilitator to welcome students into the building
