Vancouver Talmud Torah is currently seeking a Full-time (1.0 FTE) Director of Learning & Innovation.
Vancouver Talmud Torah is an Early Childhood to Grade 7 Jewish community day school fostering Jewish identity and literacy with a strong emphasis on producing students who will engage the world through Jewish values. Position Summary
The Director of Learning and Innovation (DLI) reports directly to the Head of School and is responsible for supporting the School’s dynamic, innovative, and rigorous curriculum and programming, from Early Childhood through to Grade
7. Through the introduction of new programs and initiatives, such as ISTEAM and Plant-based learning, the DLI, in collaboration with the leadership team, provides support and direction to faculty in the areas of instructional and assessment practices, and development. As a member of the Leadership Team, the DLI promotes the School’s mission, and values, and is responsible for providing leadership in the development of curriculum and programs, the promotion of best practices, and the continued strengthening of the School.
Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership
Provides support and direction to General and Judaic Studies faculty in the areas of pedagogy, instructional and assessment practices, and curriculum design and development
Maintains awareness, and supports the introduction at the School, of current trends in 21st century teaching and learning
Mentors and supports faculty around the development of best practices; shares current theories and effective strategies for instructional improvement and enhancement of student performance
Plans and participates in meaningful professional development, with the purpose of improving school culture, best teaching practice and academic achievement
Assists with continuing demands required for CAIS and ministry accreditation
Performs instructional duties as necessary
Works with and mentors the coordinators to further integration efforts, ISTEAM (ADST)/Plant based learning, and support of Judaics and General studies faculty.
Teaches ISTEAM/Plant based learning and mentors teachers in learning how to incorporate ISTEAM/Plant based learning into their teaching
Oversees the Coordinator of ISTEAM to do the above work.
Focuses on helping Judaic and General studies teacher integrate their curriculum with one another
Works with the leadership team to implement appropriate practices and review with regards to report cards and assessment
Supervises the work of various coordinators, as determined annually by the Head of School, to ensure the strategic goals of the school are being met.
Educational Management
Leads and facilitates presentations and workshops pertaining to learning and innovation
Ensures the School’s standards, policies and procedures are met; oversees follow through and completion of tasks
Plans overall professional development days and lunch and learns
Manages and oversees school subscriptions and teacher budgets
Strategic Planning
Collaborates with the Leadership Team to develop and implement the School’s strategic plan with a focus on innovation and ISTEAM
With the leadership team, ensures continuous planning and implementation of curricula and update of assessment practices that foster creative and critical thinking
Works with the HOS and leadership on initiatives such as the strategic plan and Mission, Vision and Values rework.
Committee Participation
Supports Leadership team to ensure ongoing planning and support of key academic initiatives, iSTEAM, professional development planning, assessment, etc.
Participates in School and external (ex. ISABC) committees as required
Learning Commons (Library) & Robotics
Through mentorship and collaboration with the Leadership Team, assists with the development of programming and educational initiatives for the Learning Commons & Robotics Program, in keeping with School wide initiatives
Supervises, evaluates and mentors the librarian
Human Resources
Participates in the recruitment and hiring of the librarian(s) and subject teachers
Sets expectations regarding the performance and conduct of the librarian(s)
Assists with evaluation of performance of the librarian and GS teachers
Participates in decisions regarding discipline and discharge of the librarian and GS teachers
Maintains positive relations with the faculty union
Participates in Staffing process on a yearly basis
Organizes and facilitates summer staff orientation
Compliance
Ensures school policies reflect Ministry expectations
Assist with Ministry compliance, accreditation and reporting
Assist with CAIS compliance and reporting of standards
