At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

The Midwifery Program in the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor (Tenure), or Professor (Tenure). The successful candidate will be expected to take an active leadership role as Director, Midwifery Program.

UBC's Midwifery Program was established in 2002 and is the sole educational program for midwifery in British Columbia. The program resides within the Department of Family Practice in the Faculty of Medicine. It offers a four-year entry to practice baccalaureate program, an advanced placement program for registered nurses, as well as a bridging program for Internationally Educated Midwives and a nationally known Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program.

The Midwifery faculty consists of 17 full-time academic faculty, two dozen adjunct faculty, and approximately 200 clinical faculty members. Midwifery coursework is available through videoconferencing with clinical placements spread across the province. The baccalaureate program, accredited by the Accreditation Council of the Canadian Association for Midwifery Education until February 2027, has cohorts and faculty on the UBC campus in Vancouver, Fraser Health (Surrey), and Vancouver Island (Victoria).

The Midwifery faculty are internationally known for their outstanding accomplishments in knowledge generation and translation related to educational technologies, perinatal mental health, home birth, respectful care to vulnerable populations, perinatal weight management, weight stigma and global health. The diverse student population comes mainly from British Columbia, many with previous degrees in a wide range of fields. Graduates are well-respected and currently practice in both rural and urban areas of British Columbia and throughout Canada.

Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Family Practice, using superlative leadership skills and vision, the successful candidate will lead the Midwifery Program’s strategic development and will act as a champion for its continued evolution within the University and the province of British Columbia. They will engage with a range of stakeholders to increase the Program’s resources, external profile, and recognition.

They will be accountable to the Department of Family Practice and the Faculty of Medicine for budgeting, resource allocation, faculty mentorship, performance management, and fundraising. The successful candidate will also maintain an active research profile, participate and contribute to the UBC undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate health education programs, provide mentorship and training to the learners, and serve on divisional, departmental, and other university and external committees as required.

They will work collaboratively in diverse groups to bring forward strategic initiatives for the Department and the Faculty. The successful candidate will contribute to fostering an environment that promotes inclusivity and embodies values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity. Equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice are essential to academic excellence, as well as to fostering an inclusive community for voices that have been historically underrepresented or discouraged.
