On-Call Education Assistant (School & Student Support A, SSA, EA)
Hours:
6.5 hours per day.
Salary: $32.62 per hour + 20% in lieu of benefits if not contributing to MPP, or $32.62 per hour + 14% in lieu of benefits if contributing to MPP.
Term:
September to June each year, with some positions available during Summer School.
- Provides school & student support as assigned.
- Under the direction of a senior team member, implements individual programs and contracts for students who are unable to function in a regular classroom setting.
- Jointly evaluates and maintains records of student progress through a communication log; discusses with team members any changes that may be made to an individual student's program.
- Communicates and engages with community agencies as required.
- Participates in a wide variety of field trips, sports, social, recreational and craft activities.
- Supports students in community-based programming such as work experience, travel training, and relevant community outings.
- Provides support to students with respect to their social and emotional needs.
- Supervises students as required, redirecting and providing guidance as needed.
- Assists in preparing instructional aid materials (e.g., visual aides); sets up and operates instructional aid equipment.
- Performs other work within the job band as assigned.
- Completion of Grade 12.
- Completion of a Special Education Assistant program or related field and over two (2) months of experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Ability to independently lift and position students up to 35 pounds.
- Ability to run after a student to avert them from danger.
- Provide personal care (including diaper changes, feeding, etc.).
- Where applicable, must possess or be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid Certificate; will be required to perform Occupational First Aid duties if assigned by the Principal.
- Must possess or be willing to obtain Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention training (e.g., CPI or MANDT).
- Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
- Experience providing Intensive Behavioural Intervention on a Home Team.
- A clear understanding of the theory and principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis.
- Completion of POPARD coursework.
- Ability to speak a second language.

- Reports/Evaluations (Recent EA graduates must include all Practicum Reports).
- A copy of your Work Permit or PR Card (if you are not a Canadian Citizen).
- References – name, phone number and email address of direct supervisors.
- Recent EA Graduates (5 in total): 3 supervisors from your practicum(s) and 2 supervisors or managers from your last places of employment.
- Experienced EAs (3 in total):
Current Principal, Vice Principal and previous Administrator and/or your most recent employer.
Applicants who meet the following criteria may be considered for a School & Student Support B (SSB) position, paid for 7 hours per day at a higher pay rate.
Educational Background- Completion of 2 years Post Secondary in one of the following areas:
Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family studies, Applied Behaviour Science or Education.
- Direct experience working with children or youth who demonstrate a higher need for support in the areas of social-emotional learning, behaviour, learning disabilities, mental health, or complex trauma.
- Assessing and supporting the social, emotional, behavioural, mental health and/or learning needs of students.
- Implementing various behaviour support or self-regulation programs and modifying intervention strategies for students with diverse needs.
- Working with students exhibiting challenging behaviours, FAS, conduct disorders, and implementing various learning and behaviour management strategies.
- Planning and effectively carrying out activities to promote student development.
On‑Call SSAs must be available to work 50% of the instructional days in any month and may be required to travel to two locations on the same day. Once hired, you can choose to remain on the on-call list or apply to the VSB’s internal postings, including full-time temporary contracts and continuing or permanent positions. All permanent positions include a comprehensive benefits package after passing a probation period of 16 weeks.
