Interior Design Instructor (Sessional Faculty) Job Description Position Summary

The ideal candidate for this position is someone who thrives in a dynamic, fast‑paced and driven environment; enjoys challenges, consistently meets or exceeds expectations; has a service‑orientated focus and embodies a “can do” attitude. They should possess an instinctive understanding of the Art and Design students and how to effectively communicate with them. Successful applicants will have a passion for their craft, the ability to share their knowledge, follow a set curriculum, and inspire students to excel in their chosen field of study.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Faculty positions are predicated on three contributing areas:
Academic instructor leadership, administrative duties & community engagement; teaching & curriculum; and professional development.

  • Academic Instructor Leadership, Administrative Duties and Community Engagement
    • Demonstrates a sensitivity and respect for the diverse academic, socio‑economic, ethnic, cultural, and religious background of students.
    • Enhances the student learning experience and provides mentorship.
    • Advises and supports students to achieve their educational goals.
    • Efficiently completes college administrative tasks (attendance, submitting grades and administrative forms, academic integrity, grade change, field‑trip forms, etc.).
    • Facilitates approved academic accommodations by working with Academic Advisors in Student Services to accommodate students with special needs (alternative assessment options, increased assignment timelines, accessible course content, or level and nature of classroom participation).
    • Displays a commitment to efficiently completing college administrative tasks.
  • Community Engagement
    • Displays collegiality and engages with the greater community.
    • Engages in classroom‑observation activities as part of the LCV Faculty Development Review and implements feedback received.
    • Participates in faculty meetings, forums and program‑level reviews.
    • Engages with the college, faculty and students.
  • Teaching & Curriculum
    • Teaches a minimum of one and a maximum of five sections each term, as assigned by the Program Director.
    • Demonstrates a passion for student‑centred teaching and flexibility in teaching style while effectively planning and preparing for classes.
    • Adheres to scheduled class times, maintains office hours, and attends meetings at designated times.
    • Establishes a student‑centred classroom environment and engages students in the learning process.
    • Manages the learning environment through administering the college’s academic and attendance policies.
    • Communicates effectively with students and responds in a timely manner.
    • Schedules, supervises, debriefs, and evaluates students in clinical, internship, observation, field experience, and similar work‑integrated learning settings as appropriate.
    • Displays a commitment to pursuing teaching excellence.
  • Curriculum & Quality Assurance
    • Designs, develops, and delivers course curriculum, instructional plans and associated materials.
    • Facilitates student learning, provides effective instruction, feedback, and performs evaluations of student learning.
    • Works with other faculty and administrators in developing program curriculum, standards and policies.
    • Supports the compliance requirements for regulatory bodies (DQAB, PTIB).
    • Displays a commitment to adhere to curriculum and quality assurance best practices.
  • Professional Development
    • Participates fully in the Faculty Development Review process.
    • Remains current in academic or program discipline through professional membership, conferences, industry practices, and maintaining licensure or certification.
    • Engages in continuing education through coursework, workshops, MOOCs, etc. as per individual development plan.
    • Participates in LCV‑sponsored professional development activities and events.
    • Displays a commitment to continuous learning and a growth mindset.
  • Other
    • Maintains a presence on campus with regular office hours for student support and offers support as directed.
    • Relates and applies professional experience to enhance learning by incorporating industry perspectives and relevant industry trends into courses.
