Position: Education Assistant On-Call Positions - School and Student Support A

On-Call Education Assistant (School & Student Support A, SSA, EA)

Hours:

6.5 hours per day

Pay: $32.62 per hour + 20% in lieu of benefits, if not contributing to MPP. $32.62 per hour + 14% in lieu of benefits, if contributing to MPP.

Period:
September to June each year, with some positions available during Summer School.

On-Call SSAs must be available to work 50% of the instructional days in any month. Availability across the district and may be required to travel to two locations on the same day.

Upon hiring, you can choose to remain on the on‑call list or apply to internal postings, including full‑time temporary contracts and permanent positions. All permanent positions include a comprehensive benefits package after a 16‑week probation period.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide school and student support as assigned.
  • Implement individual programs and contracts for students who are unable to function in a regular classroom, under the direction of a senior team member.
  • Evaluate and maintain records of student progress through communication logs; discuss changes with team members.
  • Communicate and engage with community agencies as required.
  • Participate in field trips, sports, social, recreational, and craft activities.
  • Support students in community‑based programming such as work experience, travel training, and relevant community outings.
  • Provide support to students with respect to their social and emotional needs.
  • Supervise and redirect students as required, offering guidance.
  • Assist in preparing instructional aid materials (e.g., visual aids) and set up and operate instructional aid equipment.
  • Perform other work within the job band as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12.
  • Completion of a Special Education Assistant program or related field and over two (2) months of experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Ability to independently lift and position students up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to run after a student to avert them from danger.
  • Provide personal care (including diaper changes, feeding, etc.).
  • Possess or be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid Certificate; required to perform Occupational First Aid duties if assigned by the Principal.
  • Possess or be willing to obtain Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention training (e.g., CPI or MANDT).
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

Assets include:

  • Experience providing Intensive Behavioural Intervention on a Home Team.
  • Clear understanding of the theory and principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis.
  • Completion of POPARD coursework.
  • Ability to speak a second language.

  • Two supervisors or managers from your most recent employment.
  • For experienced EAs:
    Current Principal, Vice Principal, and previous administrator or most recent employer.

Eligible for School & Student Support B (SSB) position (7 hours per day, higher pay rate) if you meet the following:

  • Completion of 2 years of post‑secondary studies in:
    Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration Studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous Studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Applied Behaviour Science, or Education.
  • At least 2 years of experience in:
  • Working directly with children/youth who demonstrate a higher need for support in social‑emotional learning, behavior, learning disabilities, mental health, or complex trauma.
  • Assessing and supporting social, emotional, behavioral, mental health, and/or learning needs of students.
  • Implementing behavior support and/or self‑regulation programs and modifying intervention strategies for students with diverse needs.
  • Managing challenging behaviors, including FAS, conduct disorders, and implementing learning and behavior management strategies.
  • Planning and carrying out activities that promote student development.

Itinerant assignment: A School & Student Support worker is hired to work throughout the Vancouver School District and may be transferred as needed. This position is ongoing until filled.
