Primary Purpose

The Practicum Coordinator is responsible for supporting the educational and career growth of students by developing and delivering comprehensive student practicum and career development services. Throughout the practicum process, the coordinator acts as a liaison between the university, the student, and the employer. The coordinator arranges student practicum information, paperwork, and authorization. The position encompasses the following areas of responsibility: practicum, work-integrated learning development and coordination, on-campus recruitment, and program management.

Specific

Responsibilities Practicum Development and Coordination
  • Design, implement, and administer recruitment programs for a diverse group of companies and organizations as well as graduate schools.
  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of a viable practicum program.
  • Build partnerships with organizations that can provide practicum for students.
  • Consult with employers regarding optimal marketing strategies to connect students with practicum and employment opportunities.
  • Communicate regularly with partners after they join the program.
  • Participate in job fairs organized by the Career Development Centre.
  • Act as a liaison between the student, university, and practicum or placement provider.
  • Coordinate industry employer and faculty sponsor assignments and agreements, orientation to practicum roles and responsibilities of employer-faculty sponsor-student, progress reviews with industry employer and faculty sponsor, and final evaluation upon completion.
  • Initiate and maintain contacts with employers to develop practicum.
  • Identify, develop, and monitor current practicum sites.
  • Arrange meetings with faculty and academic department chairs to identify and promote relevant practicum for specific majors.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and administration to create policies and procedures for ensuring academic quality and integrity in UCW practicum.
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate the appropriateness and relevance of practicums for students.
  • Develop and revise practicum policies and procedures.
  • Research appropriate websites that support the program.
  • Make presentations to the campus community and business community on practicum learning outcomes.
  • Assess the effectiveness of work-integrated learning programs.
Student Support
  • Provide students with guidance and information regarding practicum research, options, decision making, and goal setting.
  • Facilitate student learning by assisting students to secure appropriate practicum.
  • Provide students with practicum information, paperwork, and authorization.
  • Provide feedback for student resumes and cover letters for practicum applications.
  • Counsel and advise students in practicum planning.
  • Plan and conduct practicum workshops and information programs.
  • Develop a practicum manual and promotional material and update it as needed.
  • Advise students on a walk-in basis.
On-campus Recruitment
  • Assist employers and train student workers on the use of scheduling programs.
  • Assist in the development of employer relations and membership in professional organizations.
  • Visit employers to promote student practicum.
  • Arrange employer visits to campus and meetings with faculty.
  • Organize employer information sessions.
  • Coordinate two practicum fairs to promote jobs and practicum.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops about job search, e.g., networking at a career fair, using the internet in job search, resume writing, etc.
Program Management
  • Administer on-campus recruiting program and calendar.
  • Update website as needed.
  • Carry out general administration and management by taking a problem-solving approach.
  • Oversee and supervise student office workers in reception, communications, appointments, and mail.
  • Delegate appropriate projects to ensure smooth operation of practicum program.
  • Coordinate special events throughout the year, i.e., orientation and etiquette dinner.
  • Train and supervise student staff to input practicum information into the database.
  • Market services and programs by developing appropriate materials and advertising special events.
  • Monitor operations/revenue budgets and maintain financial records.
  • Oversee production of program materials and informational publications, such as an office newsletter.
  • Communicate information to the campus community.
  • Supervise resource library, book order requests, and ordering of office supplies.
Position Requirements

Education and Experience
  • A bachelor's degree in business, marketing, psychology, communication, public relations, or other related major. Master's degree preferred.
  • 4 years’ experience in higher education program administration and understanding of academic culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, parents, and administrators.
  • Familiarity with corporate and nonprofit human resource management.
