This position is responsible for teaching students in an assigned field of study using a diverse set of instruction methods and tools. The position develops curriculum, prepares teaching materials, provides assessments of students’ progress. It ensures the proper stewardship of college facilities, equipment and other inventories. The position is also responsible for upholding the College’s policies and procedures and for participating in meetings and events and on committees.

Responsibilities
  • Teaches students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments and independent or group projects.
  • Develops curriculum and prepares teaching materials and outlines for courses including audio visual and web-related materials where appropriate.
  • Prepares, administers and marks papers, tests, exams and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students’ progress. Provides detailed feedback on student performance.
  • Assists and provides support to students and potential students by advising on program curricula and career decisions.
  • Provides individualized or group tutorial or remedial instruction to students who require it.
  • Maintains effective stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software and tools.
  • Arranges for and supervises independent or group projects, field placements, laboratory work or hands‑on training.
  • Adheres to VCC policies and procedures including being available to students and maintaining confidentiality of student information.
  • Participates in departmental and college meetings and events. Consults with other College departments and may serve on committees concerning matters such as budgets, curriculum revision, and course and certificate or diploma requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Qualifications
    • Certificate of Qualification in a trade, such as Red Seal.
    • Master’s degree in Adult Education.
    • Completion of the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program (or equivalent) AND the Trades Trainer Short Certificate (or equivalent).
    • Experience and subject matter expertise in trades teaching, training, curriculum development in industry and/or at the post‑secondary level.
    • Experience in working with curriculum models such as DACUM and competency frameworks used by trades organizations such as Skilled

      TradesBC to develop content, assessments and programs.
    • Knowledge of the organization, mandate, frameworks, program standards and apprenticeship system requirements of Skilled

      TradesBC or another Canadian provincial trades organization.
    • Supports the apprenticeship system, technical training, and certification in the skilled trades.
    • Minimum 5 years in the trade at the journeyperson/Certificate of Qualification status.
    • Minimum 5 years teaching trades in a post‑secondary environment (can be dual credit) or union school.
    • Designed, developed and delivered online and blended programs, courses, instructional activities, and assessments.
    • Experience with learning management systems such as Moodle and other education-supporting technology.
    • Developed and delivered programs and courses using current instructional methodologies such as cooperative and collaborative learning, case‑based learning, problem‑based learning, experiential learning, and inclusive learning.
    • Experience managing instructors and programs/projects in education and/or other work settings.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with people in a wide range of classroom and work settings, including cross‑cultural environments.
    • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, training and learning, and working within a team environment.
    • Demonstrated leadership and knowledge in the field of adult education with a focus on trades education.
