Main Purpose and Function
The Community Arts Programmer is a specialized position assisting a community recreation coordinator/recreation supervisor in the development, coordination and implementation of a comprehensive community cultural development based Arts and Culture program, prioritizing work with an Indigenous focus. Programs and projects take place at Britannia Community Services Centres and in the Grandview-Woodlands and Strathcona neighbourhoods. This portfolio includes overseeing skill building arts programs such as music, dance visual and performing arts courses as well as community arts partnerships and community-engaged artist in residence projects.
This position uses community development strategies grounded in authentic consultation and involvement of residents and community stakeholders in the co-creation, administration and delivery of arts programs and community engaged arts projects.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
This position coordinates and supports community engaged arts programs and projects and supervises and facilitates community engaged arts programming and projects which may take the form of special events, conferences, artist in residence projects, exhibitions and workshops.
The Community Arts Programmer works cooperatively with Society staff and Partners, Society Committees, professional artists, arts and culture organizations and the community to understand community needs and interests regarding community engaged arts and coordinates and supports arts partners who present performances, exhibitions and festivals.
This position also conducts outreach and develops and maintains effective partnerships with community groups, arts organizations, post-secondary institutions, libraries, artists in a broad array of disciplines and service and recreation organizations towards the delivery of community engaged arts programs.
This position assists Britannia’s Manager of Organizational Change with supervision and programming for šxʷqʷeləwən ct Britannia Community Services Centre’s Carving pavilion in partnership with the VSB and consultation with the local indigenous community add the responsibility or developing and facilitating Indigenous artist in residence projects
This position is responsible for the supervision of the Britannia Art Gallery and the contracted curatorial staff.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- University graduation in Fine Arts or a related discipline and some related experience or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience with community-engaged, Indigenous and diverse community, inter-cultural and intergenerational arts projects and programming special events
- Education or some equivalent training and experience in Indigenous people’s history and culture.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities and knowledge of the inner city.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to develop programs and projects in consultation with community arts and cultural groups
