Future Science Leaders (FSL) presented by Acuitas Therapeutics is Science World’s flagship youth science and leadership program. In this program, students are part of a powerful peer network made up of some of BC’s most talented students. Students meet and learn from BC’s top science, technology, and business leaders and are supported by a team of staff and volunteer mentors.
Position Description
Working as a member of the Public Engagement Team, the Experiential Learning Specialist, Future Science Leaders (FSL) Year 1, in consultation with their direct manager, plays both lead and supporting roles in the development, coordination, implementation, documentation and evaluation of Science World’s Future Science Leaders Year 1 program. Reporting to the Program Manager, Future Science Leaders, the Experiential Learning Specialist works cross-departmentally to ensure that our STEAM experiences meet high standards of excellence, while building relationships inside and outside the Science World organization.
The FSL Year 1 (Discover) program invites grade 10 and 11 students to participate in learning and skill-building activities in a wide variety of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Design, Math) topics led by FSL staff and by guest experts. Through working on inquiry projects in peer groups, they develop a foundation in research, analysis and communication skills.
The Experiential Learning Specialist works collaboratively with the Program Manager, Future Science Leaders, the Experiential Learning Specialist FSL Year 2 & 3, and the Year 1 FSL Facilitator. From planning sessions, preparing session resources and equipment, managing online learning platforms, facilitating weekly sessions, and communicating with students, parents and collaborators, the Specialist ensures the Year1programs is successful.
As a facility, Science World is generally open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months. Typical office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am – 5:30pm, with front-facing and operational teams also working a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings. Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs and this may include special events on evenings, weekends and holidays.
